I just discovered this album and it is awesome.

The last half of the new circus maximus album is bliss, to me. Starting with Flames, the album is incredible. I love all the Vangelis synths. The first half hasn't quite clicked with me yet, it just seems boring, but maybe the tracks will grow on me.

That live video of To Hell and Back makes me realize how similar the second part of it is to The Eye and Sirens from The Odyssey, and that actually makes me appreciate the song a lot more. I can't wait until we get the next proper epic from these guys.

That's because they're an awesome live band. I have to say, as much as I don't like the chorus of Without You, the instrumental section after the solo was definitely one of the highlights of the whole set.

I think if you look at the second half of the albums, you'll know this is false. It's more like the second half of the albums are more progressive and harder to pull off live.

That's what they've been doing for at least the past two albums as well.. When I saw them on the Iconoclast tour, they played Iconoclast through Electric Messiah to start, and on the first Paradise Lost tour they played Oculus through Paradise Lost to start (I think I've seen them play literally...

Yeah he just sings aggressively, no effects. He also clearly says "furious" and "flaming." By "things" I mean the word "things." Russ likes to be a rebel and replace it with "shit" when he can.

What do you mean? One thing I noticed in To Hell and Back was that Russ replaced some of the "things" with "shit." :)

Yes, just like just about everything they write, the new songs sound great live.

Symphony X played first tonight, and they played for about 80 minutes. There were FIVE opening bands, but I only caught one of them. The whole show started at 5, Symphony X started at 8. My guess is that Overkill came on at 10, but I didn't stick around for them.
