I think that since Ghost Reveries, the vocal melodies have been gaining more and more "mainstream appeal". Which to me is a sure sign that a band is going downhill. They're losing what once made them special.

Take a song like Godheads Lament for example. Creativity and inventive songwriting all over the place. What they have been doing since WS (arguably GR): trying to be prog without having anything to say.

The new song sucks! They sound so uninspired nowadays. It seems like they are trying hard to get rid of their metal roots but forgetting that that's the only style they're actually good in. They are trying to replace it with some kind of boring prog rock. Sure, older albums contained prog rock...

Petrucci is a great songwriter and guitarist IMO. The vocals, the keyboards and the lyrics though, they are terrible. That's why I'm hoping for another Petrucci solo album or Liquid Tension Experiment (without Rudess please).

I agree completely. Which is funny because many people seem to think he's one the best vocalists ever. I'd possibly like Nevermore quite a bit with a different singer - but then, Loomis' solo album didn't do much for me either... Have you listened to it?

Liking certain types of music / metal isn't really an achievement. It's a preference, nothing more. And, let's face it, you will grow out of extreme metal when you get older anyways. Trust me.
