I started with GR but it's not even in my top 3--Still Life, MAYH, and BWP are easily my favorites. Less proggy Opeth = better imo. That said, there's not a single Opeth album I don't love, including GR.

Seriously. Although some friends and I are talking about roadtripping to Knoxville for this...it's only 10 hours from Tampa, after all. Totally worth it. :)

Definitely Still Life. A lot of fans (including myself) say it's Opeth's best. It's got growls, but not like Deliverance or Orchid have. Anyway, it's only seven songs, all of which are awesome, two of which have no growling at all.

Gojira, Katatonia, Dark Tranquillity...Bloodbath.

Playing Damnation first will probably make them feel like you've tricked them later. :) What about Face of Melinda or Dirge for November? If they don't like that, then try Damnation...and they'll at least have one Opeth CD they can enjoy. __________________

I'm partial to Still Life and BWP's vocals. Still Life just sounds different, but in a good way... and BWP is evocative. Watershed is good too, but it doesn't stand out to me. __________________

I agree...plus when you say "death metal mostly" to people that don't understand what it is, they can make a lot of assumptions about you. I know a couple of people who would really love Opeth if it wasn't for the growling. It makes no sense to me at all, but at least they can enjoy...

They're my #1 right now...although they're #2 on my last.fm, In Flames being #1 somehow. Lately all I want to listen to: Opeth, Gojira, and Katatonia, in that order.

I've seen them just once so far, at Gigantour in 2006. They were my favorite performance of that night.

Ghost Reveries, although I'm bummed that Damnation is in last place.
