I think people actually think Michael Romeo and friends have become less skilled technically, compositionally, and stylistically in their attempt to draw more fans in. I would wager alot of money that the precise opposite is true. I bet Romeo is capable of better things than he has ever been in...

New Animals as Leaders disc is sweet. Far behind the self titled and Joy of Motion in overall quality, but pretty epic rhythmically.

For me, if they use this album as a template, add a little more variety between vocal solos within the same song, build up to slightly larger climaxes both sonically and vocally, use a bit more orchestration and readd in their trademark instrumental sections for their next album (which I hope...

Over a year later, this album is making it hard for me to listen to other music. They reallllly hit the nail on the head for me. No, it's not as compositionally complex per the old SX style (though it has its own measure of complexity), and yes, the keys are absent maybe a little too much, and...

    Dream Theater: The Astonishing

I didn't dislike it. It is still slowly growing on me, in fact. It just could have been roughly twice as good. It has some awesome moments. Ravenskill When Your Time Has Come added to my top 10 (or 11 I guess).

    Dream Theater: The Astonishing

Six Degrees was my first album. Top 9 from Astonishing (I quite like all of these actually) in no particular order: The Gift of Music Act of Faythe Losing Faythe Three Days A Life Left Behind Moment of Betrayal Chosen The X Aspect A New Beginning Couldn't pick a really solid tenth. There are...

    Dream Theater: The Astonishing

Awake is my least favorite DT album probably. I don't like that one, Change of Seasons, or Falling into Infinity. Don't particularly care for I&W either except Under a Glass Moon. Six Degrees is decent, as is the self titled and Train of Thought. Finished my second listen. New favorite track is...

    Dream Theater: The Astonishing

After one listen broken up over about 6 car rides over two days: Cons: Not nearly enough metal. Like, 2 songs total, and one of them was too short and had no solo. This album is extremely far from being metal. Not enough technical chops. A few total sections. The only demonstration of prog on...

Rank your top 5 Symphony X albums (and post your top 3 songs from each album)

I think Underworld is actually just my favorite song period at the moment.

He sounds amazing, but I'm a huge high note guy. They are the climax after the buildup, so I like the satisfaction of a nice sustained and properly reverbed high note.

What actually happened to his hand? Which finger was cut and how did it happen?

I have to say that I don't like when the vocal high notes are cut short. Even on the album they are a little too brief, but live he just touches them and moves on. I assume this is intentional, though I'm not sure the exact reason. Nevermore is regrowing on me. Man I really love that song...

Seems like Russell is too tired to hit the high note in Underworld by the time he gets there! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXAJyT7zD-0
