Drum Recording, Selecting Kit and Shells

We've gotta Starclassic Bubinga at the studio; it records great. The kick (which is a bit on the deep side: 18" as opposed to the usual 16") in particular just sounds amazing. The toms have a really nice tonality; a very melodic sound with clearly-defined pitches. Plus, they're very easy to...

Another bass thread. Don't hate me.

Can't listen to the examples at the moment, but I can tell ya: if folks are saying the bass sounds great, you might consider that the bloaty clogging ain't coming from the bass. Try having a look at the guitars for cabinet resonances (these seem to happen most frequently between 130 and 180)...

Kick drum mic on floor tom?

atm25s and 441s (not 414s...that's what you meant, right? Sorry if I'm confused!) are just as susceptible to bleed as 421s; it's all dependent on cymbal position relative to the mic. But pickup pattern isn't really the issue. I think it's more about the voicing of the mic itself. For...

Kick drum mic on floor tom?

Can sound real good on the tom, however, the off-axis bleed (ride, crash, and china cymbal) can be problematic. If you're going to be sample replacing the toms, this may not be an issue, but if you're using the live mic sound, it can rear its (very) ugly head.
