I scored a free ticket to Tool last night and it was decent. They're playing interesting setlists on this tour. They're a band I certainly wouldn't pay arena prices to see, so that worked out well. I'd seen them at a festival in 2011 but didn't quite stick around for the full set.
After 6½ years, I'd move Janis Ian down one spot in my list. That's it. I swear I've evolved substantially as a person in that time. It's just that my heart stays true or something. :p
I never quite got into listening to them (maybe it's about time), but glad to say I saw 'em when they played a festival here in 2008. They were a highlight for a lot of people that weekend.
Auckland black metal is alive, just - only a couple of bands around. I'm hardly even into black metal and it's still too rare locally for me, so I try to see it when I can. I couldn't make it to this one, but a legend captured footage of the set:
A list slapped together fairly quickly for the first time I participated in one of these threads nearly 9 years ago. So expect some of the most massive list changes I've ever made coming through boys... ah yep, Metallica's down a bit, Candlemass is up a bit and Saint Vitus is in. Phew, I need a...
Event 16 was good in a charming way. Especially the random dialogue, such as the woman asking her cat if it pissed on the bed again over a smooth jazz soundtrack. Or the dude who's basically bald saying "stay out of my hair".
Also see Mega Time Squad (2018) to see how the quality of Kiwi time travel movies has endured more recently. The main actor puts on a voice that makes him a dead ringer for a friend's brother, including the part about living in a garage, hahaha:
I watched that the other day as it stood out when I happened to look up what's on that OceanicOddities YouTube channel! Super low budget and filmed in my birth town of Wellington, very amusing.
A Night in Casablanca (1946). Wow, didn't expect to love this one so much. The Marx Bros are older and wiser - they've slowed down and almost every gag made me laugh out loud, which I actually had time to do. A more decent plot unfolds (reminds me of the balance of plot & slapstick in the...
Last I read was Iain Banks - Stonemouth. Sort of a mystery, but also describing the protagonist's past blunder at an excruciatingly slow pace. The book equivalent of watching a car crash in ultra slow motion. Still, good enough.
