Anybody use PC speakers with their set up for reference mixing?

totally good idea, though most pc speakers are super inaccurate and would be pretty worthless for actually mixing, it gives you a good idea of how your mix is going to transfer to a more realistic listening environment cause the reality is your music will be played through something like that...

The Devil is in the Details (Help for Newcomers)

the key here is intent, if someone wants to find a preset to help them learn a certain software fine. if that's the only way they can learn because the mathematics and science of audio engineering is just not their milieu, i can even live with that. Its the people that think they can download...

The Devil is in the Details (Help for Newcomers)

this is true, and its not like presets don't have their place. A lot of times however, i've noticed that people want presets because they don't really understand the software they are using fully. Im not asking people to "just use their ears" and twiddle knobs, that is like trying to solve an...

Mixing and EQing with lots of layers/instruments/VSTs?

im not at a pc right now that can play the mix, but if it doesn't sound cluttered then don't worry about it, just because you have 25 tracks doesn't necessarily mean that you have to do a bunch of drastic shit in post.

Mixing and EQing with lots of layers/instruments/VSTs?

Automate the parts that are not carrying the most interest for the listener to more background levels. Subtractive eq is also your friend here, cut the frequencies that are not totally relevant to the synth. try to imagine frequency bands as little rooms for all of your sounds to go into. the...

The Devil is in the Details (Help for Newcomers)

Thank you, im hoping that this post will field some of the, "can i haz presetz?" type posts. I know that its not super helpful for specific recording questions at all, but then again that's kinda what this forum is for in the first place haha.

The Devil is in the Details (Help for Newcomers)

I've been lurking this forum for sometime now, contributing the rare post about an effect or a thread in the "Rate My Mix Section." I've noticed a lot of new guys post about trying to get more "pro" sounding mixes, looking for presets or better ampsims, mastering plug-ins etc.. I wanted to...

    How do this effect?

Automating EQ sounds like doing the most though. This effect is easily achieved by automating the cutoff of a filter like vespiz was talking about. If your in pro tools just add the AIR vintage filter to the track add cutoff to the automation dialogue, and use the line tool thing to go from the...

    ETID-style band...ETID-style mix.

Trying minimalist approach, what you think? 100% real drums/guitar/bass

ahaha @bryan_kilco i thought you were being a dick until i read the OP hahaha. but, they are suprisingly tight for 15 year old's however i feel like the guitars are like, lacking balls in the mix though. and the kick kinda falls out a little in those triplets. all things considered though its...

A just for fun track(NOT METAL)

A just for fun track(NOT METAL)

hahaha really? damn i dont really listen to those bands so i guess im not up to date on the hipness hahaha. but basically grab a bass VI that is both sine and sawtooth, you need both because if its just sine the filter you later apply wont have anything to really work with, and if its just saw...

A just for fun track(NOT METAL)

so ive been listening to dubstep lately, and i love that wobbly bass. and after figuring how to implement it in pro tools (its basically just LFO if your unfamiliar) i remixed a popular radio song and made it dubstepy http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8645029/G6dubstep.mp3 do you guys think...

Is there a whammy plug in?

This is probably the wrong thread for that, you'd be better off going to the Production Tips area. buuut. the easiest solution i see is using a pitch shifter. I use the pitch shift audiosuite in pro tools in a semi similar fashion. although it will be much less realistic as a whammy bar...
