Dither question for PROS using ProTools

Alright, I spoke to a colleague today who used to work for digidesign. Both protools HD and LE systems record in 24-bit fixed point. So all the audio files have this bit-depth. This is then converted to 32-bit or 48-bit for internal processing. So any kind of processing you use on it converts...

Dither question for PROS using ProTools

Protools LE does work in 32-bit floating point, but HD systems run 24-bit fixed point on individual tracks and 48-bit at summing busses. So for his purposes there'll be no truncation if he exports at 24-bit. As for other DAWs... Well I don't really care for them. I've never given a great deal...

Dither question for PROS using ProTools

The difference between 41k & 48k is pretty much negligible. 48k is used almost exclusively for film. If you're using a 192i/o and you want a better quality go for the 88.2k or 176.4k options. If you're worried about plug-in numbers try rendering things instead of using inserts to save processing...

noob question: How good should a demo be?

Definitely as good as possible, the none-pro audio kind of listeners (let's call them lay people) can't tell a hell of a lot of things, but they can tell when something is wrong like you wouldn't believe. So if the demo is for the general public, they're not going to sit through it if it's not...

Dither question for PROS using ProTools

I'm not going to stick my neck out and say dither is an audible thing, because by nature it's supposed to be as transparent as possible (especially when you get into noise-shaping types). But it's a necessary evil to use dither when changing bit depths. For no other reason than that the...

    Diablo 2

I love this game too. When it first came out, my current computer couldn't handle the load so I never got to play it. Many years down the track I own a mac and there's nothing to play on it... Except Blizzard stuff. So Diablo II might be the only game I have on my computer, but i'm damn glad it...

    HH's bleeding on Oh's

I get this problem quite a lot, and almost always the trick is with getting the drummer to play their hi-hats with a little less vigor. Otherwise try putting a piece of tape across it long ways to deaden it a little. I always mic up the hi-hat, even though there's usually plenty in the OH's by...

Hi Hatt Anger... how do you eat yours? Hi pass?

Best advice I can give is get the mic placement in a great spot to capture some of that crisp beautiful air and then hi-pass it (at the very least at 100Hz, but I tend to go anywhere from 250-500Hz depending on what other mic's i've put up, OHs or Rooms). Another thing you might want to try is...

    dithering

Are you mastering the tracks yourself in protools or are you sending them elsewhere to be mastered?

    dithering

I do a fair bit of mastering through Logic and have never had an issue with the dithering choices in it. By the by, correct me if i'm wrong, but Waveburner runs on the same engine as Logic doesn't it?

Guitars : how to find the SM57's sweet spot

My favorite setup for doing electric guitars is an XY pair of a 57 and a KM184 aiming the middle of the pair right for the centre of the speaker about 1-5" away depending on what I want to get out of it. I find this works great because each of the mic's is 45 degrees off axis so it starts...
