How I shall upgrade my "homestudio"?

Monitors and room treatment. I can make a great mix on a free audio program with a Mackie console if I have a decent sized room with bass traps, treatments and a pair of great monitors.

I bought a tape machine. It slays.

Best results would be to mix to the tape and send the tape to the mastering guy who has a playback deck and masters analog. Colin

Points well taken on the digital formats. I will check out bandcamp and ask the label too. Good points. Hey there Bob. Got you in the credits for keys on the song "I Am Alive" (also on Youtube hehe). You did the keys on the demo version which I re-used. :) Colin

    Necrophagist-Epitaph

God, I really thought he told me that the tone was Mesa...and he had one in the studio pics that were on the site...but cant remember if this is totally correct or not...

New Vile album - critique it

Everyone always likes a band's first album... except the band themselves... :) I do like that first album actually, good songs, production is pretty clear. Style is 90's.. But tones are only ok. DM5 kick sound, scratchy guitar, no bass presence, cardboard toms, and on and on. Mixed on a...

Best book to better my mixing skills?

My opinion is that the best thing anyone can do to increase their skills is to get high end monitors (no sub if they are big enough) and modify their room. When you can actually hear what your mix is, then you can make is perfect. If you are mixing on Event or KRK speakers or something, you...

New Vile album - critique it

Blessed are the Sick is a standard for me. Dont know what to say because the first 2 Vile albums are clearly worse productions - muddier, sloppier, less clarity. Last two are cleaner and clearer. People often associate their fondness for an album with their definition of production quality...

Mixing tuition - does anyone here do online tutorials?

The idea behind this, at least for me, is to give musicians who are recording at home, with little experience, some basic background. Even though there is a lot online, its so much to go through and there is so much conflicting info, that a newbie can just get lost. And if they have questions...

New Vile album - critique it

Hey we will be there in September! Just one show in Germany - Berlin probably. If you find my band profile on facebook you'll know. :) facebook.com/vilemetal Yeah, you know I just write what I like to hear myself. It just goes were it goes. Each album is different because I get bored...

    Maintaining brutal guitar tone

I'm not Neil but you should try to set the amp and move the mics so that the sound you are getting live is what you will want to use. So this means if you are getting too much bass, turn down the bass knob on the amp. :) And if you reamp, then you can have the freedom to adjust knobs later...

    mastering practice

Generally, we cant make bedroom warrior mixes that loud. Doing so makes all the muck float to the top. With those kinds of projects, I let the engineer send me 2-3 test mixes over a period of time and I do test masters until I think they are getting it as good as it gets and then I do the...
