Black Hawks: Clear, open, passive, expensive. EMGs: Classic EMG sound, active. Also, you can email Tim at Bare Knuckle and tell him exactly what you want out of a pickup and he'll point you in the right direction.

Bare Knuckle pickups have a much more clear and open tone to them. There are lots of comparison videos on YouTube. Check those out. They're also much more dependent on the sound of your guitar than EMG's. To exaggerate, (I repeat, to exaggerate,) every guitar with EMGs sounds like EMGs, where as...

I mean, they ARE using Axe-FX now so it's probably not about what's real, it's about what sounds best and what's doable.

It could be your interface! Do you have another one to try out? I had an interface that acted in a very similar manner. The slightest amount of gain, and it sounded like I was playing through a radio under a bridge.

How would you guys compare it to Metal Foundry?

You should also note that Cliff mentioned that the XL has a ton of memory on reserve for future updates. Sounds like he has something in mind that might not work with the II. I went with the XL. $300 now isn't fun, but in the future you might want those updates and the process of selling a II...

Definitely get Axe-Edit. It'll make your life so much easier. You don't really NEED any extras, though I've heard great things about the Ownhammer and FAS cab lab as well. Maybe download some presets from professionals and see how they built their chains so you can learn from it. I know...
