How much 'ping/ring' do you like in your snare track?

I can't say I'm much of a fan. All the snares I've been up close and personal with have sounded miles better with an o-ring. The snare in the linked video, for instance, does nothing for me except grate on the nerves. I guess I like mine pretty damn dead.

Marvelous Mixing Practice - Periphery "Ragnarok"

I usually do a lot more tweaking to get the programming to play nice with my samples, but since my primary intent was to play with the guitar tone I've been working on, I left it alone for the most part. I was happy with how little processing I was able to get away with on it. There's a...

    Drum Overhead Positioning

I found this video stupidly useful when trying to wrap my head around overhead mic'ing. It goes over all the major techniques and has good examples of what each one gives you.

CPU Overloads, Crashing, and Computer Specs.

Jesus Tap-Dancing Christ, no wonder you're having problems. The computer I built in 2007 was beefier than that. I've since upgraded just about everything in it. The problem isn't that your computer is budget, the problem is that your computer was budget half a decade ago.

New to mixing, need your opinion!

The most important thing in a rock or metal mix is the balance between your guitars and bass. If you can get an ear for that, everything else starts to fall into place. I'm not going to pretend it's perfect, but here are some examples from my mix: Here's the bass and guitar together...

Time for a new ~$400 vocal mic

I see a lot of people recommend the RE20. I can't vouch for it personally, but it has a reputation for being a good, neutral workhouse mic. If you can find a shootout comparing it with the other mics you're considering, it might be worth looking into.

    Achieving the best audio quality

Assuming you export at the same sample rate you work at, there shouldn't be a difference. Some plugins work a little bit differently at higher sample rates (for instance, one of the delays I use has more feedback at 96000 than lower rates), so your mix can change if you work at a different rate...

Practice Time - Katatonia - Saw you drown

Here's my take on the song: I went a little crazy with the room mic, but I think it fits the vibe of the song really well. Great job on the vocals. You really nailed the style.

Really good video on digital audio

It's a simplification, sure, but I think the only thing he was getting at was dynamic range. It probably could have been worded more concisely, but when teaching the basics, you usually have to compromise between technical accuracy and confusing your audience with jargon. I'll have to watch the...

Summer Mixing Time: groovy yet melodic at the same time

Since the finalists have been decided, can anyone who listened to it give me feedback or first impressions on the WR Soepratman mix? I was going for something dynamic. I blame it on all the Tool I've been listening to lately. There's more automation section to section than I heard in most of...

    Summer Mixing Time: Voting

To my ear, Sukarni is the only finalist that gets the balance between the low and upper mids right. Out of all of them, my favorite (beside my own) is Ahmad Subardjo. It gets the bass and guitar balance right and doesn't fuck up the vocal. Since mine isn't a finalist, do y'all mind if I...

    Summer Mixing Time: Voting

If there's 28 total entries, I guess a few of them are still waiting on Soundcloud to process them? I've never uploaded that many tracks at the same time...

What are some common mistakes made by amateurs?

I'd have to say too much EQ and compression. When your ear isn't developed, it's really easy to overdo them both. My mixes got a lot better when I stopped trying to EQ out every imagined blemish. Knowing when to let things move around, and how much, is another thing that takes practice to learn...

Summer Mixing Time: groovy yet melodic at the same time

Just finished putting the finishing touches on my mix! The DIs were great, and I really loved the clean guitars.
