I think it's a matter of being able to get into the groove. Taking your modes and transforming them into chords and melodies is very different than just learning a pentatonic scale and sticking to that formula.

I've been recording 4 tracks and using the 75% ish panned ones to control the volume during automating, while leaving the hard panned guitars louder in the mix (with only a little automation). I've been getting good full results like that.

My singer is looking to unload his 5150II, probably in the $600 range. I jammed on it for about a year and kept very good care of it. Just a bit of damage on the plastic vent corners, I'm gonna see him tomorrow if you're interested, I'll grab some pics.
