    Heavy Misunderstandings

Jim: yeah it seems to me a lot of US listeners are torn over liking HM and at the same time not being able to divorce their (reflexive?) tendency for making fun of anything serious. This creates self-loathing. I never had this problem (to love something dearly and seriously which is also...

    Heavy Misunderstandings

This is a cross-post, but since besides the Corroseum I do not think there are other places on the internet where such thoughts might be appreciated on any level, I hope you don't mind. Here is a stream of thoughts on the True/False dichotomy inherent in the ethos of Heavy Metal I do suggest...

    Cynic/The Ocean (Dec 15 2008) Concert Review

Dude mine are MOLTEN STEEL FASHIONED INTO EARS. I know what I like and I have my reasons. If we ever meet up, I'll have you see that there are good people that don't particularly care about Cynic, over a few beers. Variety is the variety in life. Come to Greece once. Real live human people are...

    Cynic/The Ocean (Dec 15 2008) Concert Review

I don't understand the use of such broad damnations. I mean, I understand where they come from and I feel the impulse towards them too, sometimes. But it really doesn't help anything to be confronted with such an alienating shove outside of the text for really, no reason. I can see why people...

    Adam McAuley's LotFP Work

Sorry for coming back around the forum just to post this, I realize it's somewhat tasteless but as I think I slightly triggered this thread by e-mailing Jim about my concerns, I felt I should post here as well. The reviews read like absolutely average reviews you find on the internet and as...

There's much healthy discussion on HM (mostly Ye Olde type) over at the Corroseum if you're interested.

Actually Rob Lowe had a pretty ridiculous stage presence with Candlemass also. His mannerisms conveyed a mocking of the material for me although I'm sure it wasn't the intended effect.

I think Frantic Bleep are still active, though. Their album on Earache was called "The Sense Apparatus". Fluctadmission was a demo with a stronger technothrash influence than the album. Yeah not interested in the 'lol looks like a monk!' Messiah thing either.

I'm sure Xerxes would be happy to hear that we do. I don't know about having not missed anything, though. As you've probably noted most of the records in my list are old (Negura Bunget I think is the newest entry?). This is because I do not trust to put a record in the list that I am not...

Hm no my idea of essential is personally essential, not to teach anyone how HM happened. I'd be alone on the deserted island after all. Working list: 01.The 3rd and the Mortal - Painting on Glass 02. Abstrakt Algebra - S/T 03. Absu - Tara 04. Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops 05...

albums to get stranded on an island with...

I've been building an essential-100-records list of HM, given that if we were stranded on an island these days it'd be with some sort of digital music storage I think it's a reasonable amount. The reason I'm doing that however is to eventually lose all the extra music and just keep the 100...

    Portal - Outre

The functions of the first method for me should coincide with the results of the second. That it touches upon the human condition is a meaningless prequisite if the way in which it does so doesn't touch me as a listener. Being beautiful to listen to I can take or leave, it's a huge conversation...

Our points of view can be reconciled in saying that music that fails to give you insights about yourself and the world is unsuccessful art, not in that the music that gives you these insights is the only 'art music'. It's best to not make a definition of art into a value judgment.

    new 'The Sword ' album

Yeah of course some newer music in this vein is amazing (even the worst hipster-infested 'scene' will breed some bands with honest aspirations, this is how it always was), I just find it interesting that the ones that are doing a good job of it do not seem to be actively *trying* to cross-breed...

    new 'The Sword ' album

What is tiresome for me is how low the entry is for Black Metal is these days, for reasons I'd otherwise commend, like that anyone can pick up an instrument and start a band. Thats a great concept, HM music is supposed to inspire you to express yourself (and in that it succeeds in this is why it...
