How many snare sample layers do you use in order to create the final snare?

Hmmm, depends on the source material for me. If I don't have a snare bottom I'll at least add a 1-shot bottom. If I don't have room mics I'll add one or two room samples. Also if the snare lacks body I'll add a beefier sample. What I almost always do is add a sample of the same snare that was...

    Sculpting bass tones

I can't stand the sound of a "bare" DI with heavily distorted guitars in an aggressive song. I'll low pass the DI for consistent lowend, then mic up a fender bass combo amp (I can't remember the model but I know it's discontinued, which is a bummer because it's on its last leg). I can usually...

    Bass Pedal Tone Question

I low-pass down to around 150-130hz, and don't bother with a hi-pass, just make a cut around the kick drums resonant peak. I saw an interview with a mix engineer arguing the importance of not getting rid of all your low frequency information in the sides, saying it's a quick way to neuter the...

    Iso-Cab versus Good recording room?

I think you're over-thinking it. Yes a good room is preferred over an iso-cab, iso's tend to have a lot of mid-range build-up. Most studios will use gobos to isolate the cabinet. You can save a lot of cash by just hanging blankets near the mic and cab. It may not look very professional but it...

Trying to decide how many tracks to record...

That is exactly what I mean actually. But like I said, the tones would have to be relatively similar. If one is all mids and the other is completely scooped then it would be no bueno. That and they'd need to have similar amounts of gain. People get too caught up trying to have perfect...

    Bass Pedal Tone Question

I've been saying to my bass guitar clients and friends for a while that it doesn't make sense to treat guitars and basses completely differently. For both I will hyper-compress a low-passed DI and blend it with the main tone. If the guitars are quad tracked then I'll add a third processed bass...

Trying to decide how many tracks to record...

I would still try to use both amps, unless the engl and mesa were dialed in completely differently. Doing it that way will also help your mix to sound wide. If it sounds too lop-sided then yeah I would just use the mesa. The only way to know is to experiment.

Trying to decide how many tracks to record...

I typically double-track both guitarists (assuming there are two guitarists) which gives me a maximum of 4 rhythmic tracks at any given moment. As long as the playing is nice and tight I will do unique performances on different amps, that way I don't have to worry about phase issues. So, if a...

Modern Hardcore Mix - Please Help Me :)

Just listened to the track on my phones speaker, later today I'll check it out at my desk. I will say it sounded like everything had a pretty good balance. Your mix notes left me wondering if you happened to cut out everything 40hz and below. Bass track might could benefit from it (like I said...

Snare sidechain --> (Rhythm guitars + bass) bus?

I've done this on centered guitar "thick'n'r" tracks for a while now, but never thought of applying it to the hard-panned tracks. Cool idea, I'll give it a go sometime soon.

    Beartooth Guitar Tone... How?

Except that's their live rig, Caleb recorded everything by himself so he very well may not have used their rigs. On both Attack Attacks! Last album and as well as on My Ticket Home 's first album he used LePou so I wouldn't be surprised if that's what he used for Beartooth. Although I could be...

    preprocessing before mixing

I like to view what I do with preprocessing as more of a tracking decision and not a mixing decision. I've never received tracks from a proper studio so I'm basically emulating an SSL with a 1073, 1176, and decapitator in the signal chain. All set at very conservative levels mind you. On a...
