What is art and what is not.

Lady Gaga has obviously been influenced by Madonna, Marilyn Manson, etc. She's largely doing stuff that has been done before, and seems to believe she's shocking people a lot more than she is. I'm not hating on her for it - she actually seems like a positive enough person from what little I've...

    Controversial non-metal opinions

They're inconsistent, IMO. To be fair, it's hard to continually change your sound - sometimes radically - and always put out 5* albums, although it is admirable to make the effort nonetheless. But the fanboys that act as if Thom Yorke shits gold are probably going a bit overboard. There are...

    Controversial opinions on metal

I've never grasped the extreme ends of this debate. Or the prog debate, for that matter. Being extremely good at your instruments doesn't make you write great songs. But playing instruments well doesn't mean you're a total wanker that can't write an interesting song, either. Some so-called...

    Controversial non-metal opinions

There is some awfully good Americana, folk, and bluegrass music out there that people are missing out on because people label it as "country" and roundly dismiss the lot of it.

    Controversial opinions on metal

Big Nevermore fan, but yeah, the most recent album was pretty mediocre. Loomis wasn't as prominently featured it seemed, which is inexplicable. I enjoy Dane and all, but Loomis makes the band. His solo album is also well worth picking up.

That's the argument, of course.... but all it takes is one time for them to get you if they can. You don't need to give away 3000 copies.

    The official metal 2011 thread

So glad we didn't have to wait half as long for new Dredg this time. Very curious to see what direction they take things after the previous album was such a departure in many ways from the previous two.

The Thread Where You Talk About Music You Like

The record companies tend to be the biggest criminals in all this business. And great point about selling the mp3s. I always found that inconsistent as well. For that matter, you can give away all the cds you want. I can buy cds and turn around and give them away five minutes later if I want...

What is art and what is not.

I think one can find art in everything, or at least look at anything from an artistic perspective. Art doesn't even have to be intentional. Some believe that art has to result from talent, creativity, etc... I just think there is good art and bad art, and that which is which is highly...

The Thread Where You Talk About Music You Like

I'm more than willing to lay down a few bucks for a quality album. However, I agree with the special circumstances, ie unreleased material with no expected release, or an album being out of print for years so that you have to dump half your paycheck to come up with a copy that's probably used...

    Albums currently displeasing your ass

I'm with you. I was excited the guitarist was back and was banking on a return to form, but listened to some samples before the album was released and decided against rushing into a purchase. Don't know that I'll pick it up at all now. Too many higher priorities.

    Sludge metal. It's good;

Lots of good bands listed here, but missing The Ocean.

Worst 'metal' hits of the late '90s & early '00s

The biggest problem with the Deftones is the crap bands they tour with. But their music is pretty good. They get lumped in with nu metal, but I consider them more alternative metal because it makes me feel better about liking them
