You can blend amps many ways. I will quad track (have the guitarist play 4 performances) and record a left & right with one amp i.e. Peavey 5150 & then record a left & right with another amp i.e. Bogner Uberschall. The contrast of the amps blended together is what makes up the final guitar tone...

There's so many variables. Always use a baritone guitar or 7-string when possible. This helps but doesn't solve the problem. Tune to attack! Meaning, make sure the guitarist is tuning at the same velocity at what he would be playing that section. i.e. picking hard = tuning hard, picking soft =...

There's a few techniques you could employ. Firstly, have the drummer use the brightest tom skins possible (Remo Pinstripes work well) so that you're boosting less highs in the mix when EQ'ing attack into the toms. As good as Melodyne is, it just doesn't work well doing this. Too many artifacts and you can hear the tone suffer as a result. Good idea though.

It's something that I wouldn't normally do but it's certainly not wrong. If it sounds good then do it! At the end of the day trust your ears.

The UAD plug-ins are the most accurate sounding emulations out there. I work in commercial studios on a daily basis and I've never heard any plug-ins sound as close to the real deal as the UAD stuff.

You have to EQ your amp differently in every venue you play. Most guys have too much treble and presence forgetting that a live venue is always brighter and more reflective than a rehearsal room. An SM57 is always a safe option miked just off centre of the speaker. I'm a big fan of cab sims for...
