Wow, I had no idea! Joe Bonamassa just made me feel stupid!

I've always used my amp's EQ to set my tone and never touched the tone knob on my guitar. Is there any use for it? I understand how it can be useful for changing the tone while playing, like from verse to chorus, but is that it's only use? I'm interested to know if anyone uses it and why?
