Has anyone tried the switchable EMG81? I can't see myself using the single coil mode a lot, but it might be handy once in awhile as long as the regular mode sound isn't compromised. I'd probably go with a 60 in the neck slot, running at 18v of course.

The main guitar I have an 81 in is a Jackson RX10D (alder body, maple neck I think). Are there any other passives I should look into besides the Q-tuner and the Warpig? Some combination of EMG81/89/60/85s sounds promising, but I'm not totally sure yet.

And EMG isn't going to thin out the low end too much? I love them, but have never used them on a guitar tuned below D standard. Is the 60 the one that's supposed to be less modern-sounding?

I recently picked up an Agile AL-2800 baritone (27", Les Paul-style) and restrung it in fifths, so it goes low G, D, A, E, B, F#. Unplugged it sounds pretty good, but the stock pickups are awful. Muddy, dead, and microphonic to the point where you can hear amp noise if you tap the KNOBS. So...

I don't think there is one - good bass cabs are built specifically for the drivers they come with, so bassists don't swap them around as much as guitarists.

Yeah, that sounds kind of tempting but I'm worried the low string would be mush since this guitar is fretless. For now I think I'm going to try DAebf# with no high string since that won't require any serious shenanigans. If I like that, I might try adding high octave strings to the two low...

Yeah, I was figuring a new nut might be in order but I'd actually forgotten about the tuners. When I used to play in B (different guitars) I had to have the Sperzel factory make me a couple of bored-out low B tuning pegs, so I could see that being an issue here. Thanks guys!

I'm not sure how much you're seeing those Ampeg heads for, but I'd go with a rack setup instead if you're looking for clean. Maybe Sansamp + solid state power amp. Right now I'm using something like that (preamp + EQ + 1200 watt amp) through two Acme 2x10s and it's incredibly deep and clean...
