A way to achieve a similar sound is to take 2 pieces of drumhead about 5"x5" and duct tape it to the head. You have to put the piece of drumhead against the head, and hold it in place with the mallet, and then put the tape on so that you make sure that mallet isn't touching the tape - otherwise...
