    Room size for vocals

The room (even a dead room) plays a huge role in the sound of the vocals. Usually making it "dead" involves a lot of 703 panels (or similar) which take a lot of high end out but is not as effective at the boxy frequencies (600hz and below). Try a larger room and place a few baffles placed...

How to decide if a plugin sounds good

You can just duplicate the track and place the VCC plugin on one of the tracks. Match the volumes with your ear using the faders or using the PhaseScope plugin that comes with PT10. (under stereo tools>phase scope in the plugins menu i think). Then you can put the solo mode into x-or in the...

Micing drums with just 2/3 mics?

Use the Glyn Johns method. Ive used it MANY time and it really works well. Gives a good balance of room and close mic sounds. You'll need 3 mics but its the best sound you'll get out of using a small amount of mics. Here is a pic @...

    Drum mic phase-alignment

Not really sure what all the concern is about phase issues with drums. The phase relationship of the drums is a big deal but its not the only thing that leads to a good drum sound. You will NEVER get all the mics in a setup to we completely in phase. If the OH/Rooms/toms whatever are out of...

    Rate my mix

Thanks for the comments! This mix is done all in the box (no external 2bus chain) in Pro Tools. I was previously mixing in Logic a few years ago but i was always tracking with Pro Tools and I got really tired of transferring back and forth. As for the "mastering" chain, I do it all on the...

    Rate my mix

Thanks! Vocals would be nice but dont know anyone who could do them and Im DEFINITELY not the guy for that :) Rhythm gtrs are an old, cheap LTD with some duncan designed humbuckers in it through a 6505 head & Mesa cab. 57 on the cab through a Shadow Hills pre. Some of the lead/accent...

Pro Tools "Small Increment" trick not working

Never worked on a Windows system but on a Mac it is command click on the fader to move in .1dB increments and "cntrl" to change to different metering statuses. Try the other modifier buttons and see if they do anything. Hope that helps

    Anyone Own any AEA?

Ive used a lot of AEA mics over the years. They are all great but if you are looking for a versatile one, I would suggest the R84. Sounds great on about everything that I put it on. Really great drum room mics, vocals, etc. never put it on on a guitar cab but im sure its great. As for the...

    Buzzzzzzzzzz

Sounds like a ground loop. Try plugging all the gear in the chain into the same outlet. Everything should have the same ground reference at that point and "should" eliminate the buzz. If not, try switching cables and taking pieces out of the chain piece by piece and see what is causing it

Taming the cymbals in the overheads

Get a better drummer that doesnt bash the cymbals to hard. A really great drummer will be able to balance the kit using only 2 mics

    Question On Mixing Cymbals!!!

Compression is tricky on overheads. Depends largely on the style of playing. If you compress too much on an up tempo song with a lot of crashes they tend to sound washy because the compression is changing the decay of the cymbals. Mid and lower tempo songs benefit more from compression on...

    PT I/O issue

Did you open a session that was created on another pro tools rig?

PT: Moving sections without affecting automation etc

I always start a new mix by importing session data from a previous song on the same project. Usually you can at least count on your drums and bass to be ballpark of what they need to be. Guitars/synths/vocals/etc usually change too much between songs to rely on importing sounds from another...
