Why is the metalness of Black Sabbath questioned but not 80s Priest or Dio?

Agreed, but what he said about the forced Christian theme is correct.

Why is the metalness of Black Sabbath questioned but not 80s Priest or Dio?

I stand by what I said. It is probably the only thing I agree with Lester Bangs on

Why is the metalness of Black Sabbath questioned but not 80s Priest or Dio?

The only thing keeping Master of Reality from being a 5 star album for me is After Forever. The pro-Christian theme is too forced (it comes off to me as an attempt at proving to the public that they're not Satanists), and Ozzy vocals are lacking something (confidence in the theme, maybe)? The...

    Controversial opinions on metal

He clearly identifies with the metal scene. I think him and Tony Iommi are just too humble to admit to creating a genre of music

GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1980

As I predicted, most people's lists look the same more or less. I would say the new wave of metal was still in its infancy at this time. I wonder how much more variation we'd see if we bumped this up a few years

Why is the metalness of Black Sabbath questioned but not 80s Priest or Dio?

I also want to point out that when you watch the live Sabbath performances (even from 1970), it's pretty obvious that they can be counted as metal even by today's standards. I watched their 1970 Paris set and in my opinion it clearly goes past being heavy psychedelic/blues rock and crosses the...

Why is the metalness of Black Sabbath questioned but not 80s Priest or Dio?

Is there a 3rd category, 60s babies who were introduced to metal by 80s pop metal and don't want to acknowledge that metal existed before that?

Why is the metalness of Black Sabbath questioned but not 80s Priest or Dio?

Explain to me why "Sweet Leaf" is not metal but "Rainbow in the Dark" is

BYOB has chugging from start to finish. And Fluff is a metal song? I agree that SBS is a metal album, but it has 2-3 non metal songs. And I agree that heavy/abrasive doesn't always equal metal.

Why is the metalness of Black Sabbath questioned but not 80s Priest or Dio?

I'm not personally questioning Dio's metalness, I'm just challenging the idea that Sabbath didn't become metal until he joined. Agreed.

    Controversial opinions on metal

I agree that the majority of a band's work should be metal for them to be considered metal, but I disagree about that song not entirely being metal. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath has a jazzy chorus with non distorted guitars, but it's still fully a metal song in my opinion. I can't even think of...

    Songs currently kicking your ass.

I must have listened to this 50 times over the last 2 weeks. That riff is so groovy

BYOB is a full blown metal song as far as I'm concerned, it has all the ingredients. I guess you can say they are an alternative rock band with some metal songs.

Why is the metalness of Black Sabbath questioned but not 80s Priest or Dio?

I agree with that consensus. However I've noticed quite a few people say otherwise. I've even seen people claim that Sabbath wasn't metal until Dio joined.

System of a Down counts as a real metal band. At least from what I've heard from them so far, I think it's unfair to pigeonhole them as "nu metal". How is a song like BYOB not metal?
