I have quite a collection of picks and when recording DIs, I'd say I can spend at least 1 hour finding the best sounding one. Sometimes I'll even use different ones for different riffs. The thickness of the pick alone is not that relevant, as the strings gauge has a lot to do with which pick...

Pro Tools is teh sex for automation. I automate an awful lot, and think I'll do it even more in the future after reading some very interesting ideas here. When I "master" some demos and stuff, I will often automate the threshold of the limiter, which I like a lot to have more distinct dynamics...
