You'll need a powered mixer, 2 speakers and a microphone Check out Carvin or Peavey for mixer/speaker combo deals, they have reasonable prices. As for a mic, you can't go wrong with a Shure SM58.

Just get yourself a Behringer V-amp. A cheap fix, and good tones for direct recording. Zoom isn't exactly known for making good sounding products.

True, but most musicians tend to know nothing about recording or sound in general.(despite of what they might think themselves) Just find someone who has experience with your kind of music, and you'll be fine.

There are so many factors that can result in a band getting a bad sound, nobody inhere will be able to tell you exactly why. My guess is that it's part fault of the sound man, part their playing(their music requires a lot of precision, which they probably can't handle outside of the studio)...

I have basically the same model of guitar as Macalpine(I have the DC727, he plays the DC747 I think), and it has a floyd rose style bridge on it. Works perfectly fine.

That's the WORST advice I've ever heard. Lessons, even if it's just a few of them, are the BEST way to start learning a new instrument. Someone to guide and correct you is the best thing you can have.

When playing live, hopefully the venue will actually provide a PA system. When they do, you just send everything(drums, guitars, bass, vocals whatever,...) through the mixer, and depending on the specs of the system, every musician might actually get a differently mixed feed from the monitors...
