A bad line? one of my monitors had a bad cable going into my PC which caused the input level to remain unchanged but the output to be severely dimmed, causing me to turn it up way high, skyrocketing my input signal to all hell.

I personally think you could get better sounds from free plugins such as LePou amp sims and using LeCab with IR's. Although if its just for demos then what your doing right there is quite fine and it shouldnt matter if its all going to be re-recorded.

Rule of thumb should be to treat every mix individually. One song I might have my guitars high passed around 120, another song - maybe with a different tuning - it might be as high as 140-150. I've even seen people high pass guitars as high as 180 due to a huge resonant low end, but it still...

You can get brightness in the 4-7k range like a previous post said, although sometimes it can clash with cymbals so I occasionally slap a low pass around 15k - 16k to eat out any fizzy-ness. You could try bypassing your tone pot? Or install a push/ pull pot, a lot of people eliminate the tone...
