Is bright mix without additive EQ possible?

This took me a while to grasp. An EQ is just a special volume knob. Lose the lows and turn up the track, it gets brighter. Sounds like frog is also correct "It's just semantics. And methodology." Tom

    RC Tube constantly crashing PC

Do you have an lok1 and ilok2 both plugged in? I had issues (RC Tube being the only ilok2 only plug) when both were plugged in. I transferred all the auths from ilok 1 to the 2 and just have my ilok 2 plugged in. Worth a shot. Good luck.

how to deal with crap drummers?

Nope. Not trolling either. I just feel the nickleback / daughtry type stuff has to be more consistent than metal. I know im in the minority and im ok with that. Maybe it's cuz modern rock music doesn't speak to me so i don't care if it's lifeless. Maybe im just doing things wrong...

how to deal with crap drummers?

I often record bands without a click. I remove the front kick head and stuff it full of shit so it's as muffled and quiet as can be, then trigger it. The guitarist and drummer play the song until we have all the parts tight. This usually means editing the different takes together. The band goes...

Mixing our Live DVD... Crowd mic died.. now what :\

Sounds like you figured it out, but you could try audio from a camera. Sometimes it works in a pinch. I've done quite a few live videos and have always been amazed how much better they sounded with the video. All the little shit i wasn't happy with dissapeared once the picture was there. Tom

    (Very) small mixer?

Soundcraft Notepad 102 Mixer http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/soundcraft-notepad-102-mixer/430565000000000 It does have 2 mic inputs, but it's dirt cheap and small. The pre's get pretty good reviews so they might end up being useful somewhere.

About to master a post hardcore/metalcore song for my first client...

I hope you are not charging if you are asking this. This question can never be answered without listening to what the material needs However, I would import a song that has the qualities you are looking for into your DAW and compare your song to it. Less is more and you can really dig...

    How to control high mids?

This is my take on it. Might sound a little dull, but throw a pultec with an 8k boost on the master, and watch your mix jump alive.

    Sweet PC Keyboards

+1 "Out of curiosity, what do you guys use the macro keys for? " Stole the idea from Kenny Gioia quickkeys tutorials. In protools I have a key programed to tab to transient, then go up to the next track, paste a midi note, then return to the track below. It gets me 90% of the way there in a...

    pc for a professional studio

The point I was trying to make is the only reason to "have" to have a mac is if you are a commercial studio try to lure "name" engineers to track in your facility. If you have all the outboard, the SSL, the vintage mic collection, the swimming pool in the lounge, I think you would be shooting...

    pc for a professional studio

I use a PC i built using recommendations from DUC'ers. I enjoy building and maintaining PC's. The bands that come to me to record could care less if it's a mac or pc. I'm poor. lol. The lack of differences between the 2 have been better stated than I can do. I have got to stick...

Mixing a live band "on stage"?

+100 Don't be afraid to walk on stage and turn their amps up/down to get the right balance instead of relying on the PA for that. Great thing about small rooms is the energy of the band makes up for a lack of gear. I'll take bodies in the room over a great PA in front of no one any day...
