    The Still Life dropouts

I'll never get how any of Opeth's albums can be considered to have "bad production". I guess some have rougher or less polished production thatn others (MAYH comes to mind), but geez, ever listen to 90% of death and black metal? I'm not trying to sound like a tr00 kvlt elitist, but I just find...

My Arms, Your Hearse vs Still Life: which concept do you prefer?

My favorite is My Arms, Your Hearse for two reasons. One, I just love the sound of that album above anything else they've released so far. It's so cold and sorrowful, but still has injections of beauty and warmth. I also love the flexibility of the concept. It's rather sketchy (which adds to...

    morbid angel appreciation

You know that's not his real last name, right? It's a psuedonym, like in black metal. He took it from the "fake" Necronomicon. The book doesn't actually exist, it was invented by H.P. Lovecraft and referenced to multiple times in his short stories. Somebody actually wrote a "Necronomicon"...

    Band Names

Read some H.P. Lovecraft, preferrably dream cycle stories, and use names from there.

    Out of curiosity...

I'm not sure when Cowboys from Hell came out (what you said sounds about right). I'm not a huge Pantera fan, but I know enough about them.

    Out of curiosity...

I can't believe no one has mentioned Pantera yet. Their first four albums (which they deny exist) were goofy glam metal, then they became one of the most influential heavy metal bands ever. They more or less created groove metal.

    SUBGENRE MADNESS thraed!

Nortt - Pure Depressive Black Funeral Doom Metal. What's even more hilarious is that I didn't even make that up, he calls that his genre.

I understand that perfectly, but honestly, do any of those bands besides Bathory sound as similar to Darkthrone or Emperor to be warranted the same genre? I know black metal elitists love to classify those bands as black metal as well, but to me that's the same as calling Slayer death metal...

Since I'm sure there's got to be a few people here who like avant-garde music...

avant-garde is simply a French word meaning "vanguard". It could be used to defind the vanguard of an army, but more often it is used as the term for "cutting edge" art. Basically it's experimental art, music, fiction, and film. Surrealism and progressive music are closely associated with it...

Which album did you download? I haven't heard anything yet, I've just done a lot of reading. They were fronted by jazz musician John Zorn and their early work experimented with grindcore and thrash, but also featured alto sax and other oddly non-metal influences. I'm interested in Torture...

...anyone familiar with Naked City? I'm thinking about checking out the Black Box that has the albums Torture Garden and Leng Tch'e.

Nah, I've come up with some pretty depraved things, but never even teased the idea of carrying them out.

Seriously. I'm sure prior the the Norwegian explosion there could have been some kid fooling around on his guitar and realized that you can make a really evil sound with distortion, tremolo picking, and discordant riffs, yet had no intention of making an anti-Christian statement. I'm not...

I was posting that in response to Justin S.'s post about how he believes that death and black metal as simply music forms are directly linked to the views of the artist.
