I also hear a good deal of Coroner in Opeth's guitar work. I think Mikael said he was into them. Well worth checking out, one of the most original thrash bands I've heard. Maybe some Voivod as well.

I think I just understood something - many bands progress because they learn more about their instruments and composing in general as their career goes on. I think this is the ideal situation to play in a successful band, when you're literally just learning. I guess this was the case with Chuck...

Emotionally it's one of their most romantic songs. What makes it brutal is how the vocals are done, I think.

What have you heard? They were definitely more progressive or at least strange than Death, (not taking anything away from Chuck!). It is silly to compare anyway, because they were of a completely different genre. Because they were not that extreme, they get overlooked these days. I'd suggest...

I agree Opeth are (were) progressive within the songs themselves, most notably in the Orchid times. I think they have by large strayed away from those journeys though. Nowadays their music is like some intriguing artifact... Still Life did have some of that storytelling aspect, and the BWP...

This was merely inspired by some discussion I've seen lately, directed at no-one but for anyone to ponder. I'm still curious about how people use that word.. Someone like Rush could be called progressive, going from twenty minute "songs" to five minute Songs to almost completely changing...

Rush is Rush and always will be. I like both bands though. Anyway, Pink Floyd tends to drag me down, which is fine if I feel like it, but Rush always lifts my spirits, which I need more often! You can't beat that lifeforce...
