Original Backing Track - C Aeolian

Hey Everyone: I'm a huge fan of guitar backing tracks. I think they're a fun, effective way to learn your scales, develop new licks and learn how to improvise. There's a million of them out there, but sometimes it's hard to find one that catches your ear and suits your needs, so I started...

What to charge for a song...

OK, I'll be happy to post this elsewhere. I'm more of a casual poster. I definitely spent a lot of time on it; several hours in between tracking and mixing, but obviously I was not expecting it would have any sort of commercial use. It was just a personal project.

What to charge for a song...

Hey Everyone: So, I have a quick question regarding charging for your work. I have a recently created YouTube channel where I post my original material. I'm not an aspiring producer or engineer or anything; I'm just a songwriter and guitarist dude who no longer plays in bands but still really...

    Lead guitar on metal

My music is also very lead-heavy so let me share some things I have found work for me. My rhythm and lead tones are actually very similar. I generally do add more gain to the lead tone, and set my low and high passes a little wider in the EQ spectrum just to differentiate them a bit. Then, I...

    Quadtracking, really worth it?

Legend is, for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Billy Corgan did 40 separate guitar tracks. So, octo-tracking is for pussies!

Worst Guitar Tones in a Professional Recording.

For me, it'd have to be the guitar tones in "This Is Love, This Is Murderous" by Bleeding Through. Was never a huge BT fan, but after listening for a while, it struck me how awful those guitar tones are. Thin, brittle, with absolutely no clarity and the gain cranked as high as humanly...

Can we Talk about Studio Fredman Style Mixes?

Colony is the quintessential "fredman" recording for me. That tone is pure magic. Punchy, heavy as fuck, and still tons of clarity. I didn't know about the ATG documentary. I'll check that out for sure.

    Peavey Amps Comparison [6505,JSX,Triple XXX]

I have a Peavey Ultra Plus, which as I understand is the same as the XXX. It has reverb built into it, probably in need of a re-tubing and I definitely need to invest in a better cab. I run it through a 5150 cab, and it just has a certain muddiness I can't quite seem to shake. I like what you...

My First Recording Project - How did I do?

Should have cleared that up, yes, it's meant to be an instrumental. Honestly, the goal is to get my home demos to sound as good as possible. I'm not sure what I want to do with my material; whether build a band around it or use it as a portfolio of sorts and maybe join a band in need of a...

My First Recording Project - How did I do?

First of all, I'm by no means an recording engineer. I'm mainly a guitarist and songwriter. I haven't played in a band for a couple of years now, but I still write a lot of original material, so over the last few months I've invested a bit of time and money into getting the best possible sound...

My First Recording Project - Original Track - An Uncertain March

Hey Guys: Just wanted to share my first recording project I've completed, an original track of mine called An Uncertain March. First of all, I don't consider myself a "recording engineer" by any means. I'm mainly a guitarist and songwriter. The last couple of years I've found myself...

Tracking guitar question (play right through vs riff at a time)

It depends on what I'm tracking. I like very layered solos, with lots of harmonies going in and out, and doubling parts and stuff, so I often do takes just for the harmonized bits. Occasionally I do over-extend myself and I run into a part I have to break down into smaller chunks, but for the...

what is your tuning & strings gauge ?

Over time, I've really begun to dislike drop tunings and super-low tunings. All my guitars are in D standard, which suits me just fine. It's got some natural heaviness from the slightly lower tuning, but enough string tension to retain note clarity. It's the same reason my action is on the...

    Question about compression

I echo what everyone said about panning: I always record dead center, just to make sure the take is as tight as I can make it. I don't do any kind of panning until afterwards. I personally don't like quad-tracking; I don't have the knowledge to make it sound good, so I mostly stick to two...

Grouped Tracks in Reaper Not Panning Correctly

I absolutely did. I had the same impulse loaded in two cabs, one left and one right, both panned correctly, meaning hard L and R. I switched to NadIR and the panning is working correctly. Same impulse and everything. Odd.
