1980s PCs

Big middle finger to third millennium electronics here. This is our first PC from 1986 when I was 2. Both it and the original monitor seem to be working just fine.

Not sure if I should be surprised that its name doesn't return any Google results, but it's a Super Star XT-6 made in Taiwan - an IBM XT clone which no doubt infringed on a patent or two.

This is the second computer program I ever wrote (in BASIC) when I was 10... "The Clown Show".

There are even some animated images on disks labelled "X-Rated" that someone had given my Dad before porn GIFs were a thing, haha:

I found a copy of Samantha Fox's strip poker for the C64 a few months a back when I was going through boxes of crap I should have thrown out years ago. It was in a disk box along with Leisure Suit Larry 1, 2 and 3.

Graphics don't come much better than this.

Found out the image in the spoiler above is nicked from MacPlaymate. But these ones aren't!

Unfortunately writing to the hard drive has stuffed the PC a bit now, but we can still play games on disks or maybe find a replacement.

Later my Dad had a work laptop with Win 3.1 and I played heaps of Leisure Suit Larry III. Got stuck at one point for so bloody long that when I eventually figured it out I wasn't interested in playing it any more.

LSL was a bit like that, the cool game everyone wanted when it came out but the fad died quickly. When LSL5 came out it was "oh shit are they still making those?"

Last year I got a USB floppy drive so I could copy some of the BASIC games to my current PC. Most of the files are still dated either 1982 or 1985, pretty buzzy.

There's some other classics like Killer Maze, where there's nothing much deadly, you just have to find the exit. Screenshot proportions are different here as I was trying PC-BASIC instead of DOSBox:

I went through a stage of running MAME to run all the old C64 games, then running DOSBox to run some of the early pc games. With the amount of roms out there now just about any old game is downloadable and more and more are actually becoming legal as time rolls forward. Unfortunately for me my nostalgia trip was short lived because I got bored with most of the games

It is fun to check out those old games once in a while, but I too have found that they really don't hold up these days.
