Thinking about this mostly because of a) Mikaei Akerfeldt's 70s heavy list of his favorite heavy metal-ish albums and b) listening the crap out of Fields of the Nephilim for the last couple weeks...

While the '70s and '80s had their shares of great metal, I'd argue that the '90s are when metal came into its own as a genre. So what are your favorite releases from the 1990s for hard/heavy/dark music?

Metal Storm's top rated albums from '90-'99, to give us something to work from:

  1. Rust In Peace - Megadeth
  2. Symbolic - Death
  3. Painkiller - Judas Priest
  4. The Sound of Perseverance - Death
  5. Crimson - Edge of Sanity
  6. Still Life - Opeth
  7. Images and Words - Dream Theater
  8. Metropolis Pt. 2 - Dream Theater
  9. Storm of the Light's Bane - Dissection
  10. Stronghold - Summoning
Amorphis shows up on the list at #64 with Tales...

Only Death, Opeth, and maybe Edge of Sanity would make it into my own list of my very favorites from the '90s.

My top 10 from the 90's:

1. Amorphis - Elegy
2. Death - Symbolic
3. Sepultura - Arise
4. Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill
5. Desultory - Bitterness
6. Fear Factory - Demanufacture
7. Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes
8. My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River
9. Down - NOLA
10. Type O Negative - October Rust

I didn't like MDB & TON during the 90's, but became a big fan of both over the last couple of years. Otherwise, this is a pretty accurate snapshot of what I was listening to during that decade.

'90s were mostly goth/industrial for me with some alternative metal in the mix. I drifted out of metal during the early '90s because I didn't like the US scene and the only European stuff any of my friends new was BM. I drifted back into metal a decade later when industrial tanked and the internet finally let me catch up with all the great nordic stuff I had missed, so '90s metal is like archaeology for me. Here's 13 that feel inspired to me:

Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Bathory - Hammerheart
Cynic - Focus
Death - Symbolic
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve
Nefilim - Zoon
Opeth - Morningrise and Still Life
Tiamat - Wildhoney
