Looking at getting something primarily for tracking various things, these two seem the most versatile and geared towards the heavier styles.

Dragon Pros: has the saturation adjustments, extra EQ type controls and parallel blend built in. Cons is relatively new and unproven in some regards, although all the reviews I've read have been positive. Expensive.

Distressor: also seems very versatile and is a classic, well regarded piece, especially for rock / Metal. Almost the same price with the brit mod.

Any other thoughts? Thanks!

Completely unrelated here, but I read on a metalsucks article comment that you picked up an EVH 5150 III, Sacha. Is that true? back to using real amps again?

Distressor is a safe bet for tracking just about anything. 1176s are very limiting (ba-doom-crash) due to their extremely aggressive characteristic and very fast attack times.

The only things I ever track through an 1176 are room mics, in case I feel like all-buttons on the way down. Anything else, and it's very easy to over-do.

Thanks for the feedback

Yeah, I never really left real amps hehe. I was planning on going the Axe + VHT route and was pretty far along, but we had a show come up and I didn't have everything together yet. So I rented the EVH, plugged in, cranked up and it blew me the fuck away instantly. I knew I had to have it so I made a new rig around it. Still using the Axe for all FX and a few other tones with my switching system.
