2014 has got no Platinum record yet

Based on sales I am not surprised. People actually paying for music is a thing of the past.

Plus popular music in general is pretty bad. It's all auto tuned, computer generated and carbon copies of one another.

From what is mentioned, only singles are hitting platinum, but it still decreased by 20% since 2013.
At the same time, Apple is trying to get Beats to propose their streaming service down to 5$ a month as opposed to 10$... Crazy

Applies to most music now including metal. Pop at the moment is at a high point IMO, loads of great tunes in 2014.

Is this for actual physical album/cd sales, if it is it makes sense that people aren't buying physical music these days. I'm sure a lot of the current "in things" are selling millions of digital singles and albums.

"More than 32 million new cumulative certifications were awarded today including a 9x multi-Platinum for “Firework,” two 7x multi-Platinums for “California Gurls” and “E.T.,” three 6x multi-Platinums for “Dark Horse,” “Hot N Cold” and “Teenage Dream” and more. Katy’s career RIAA tally now encompasses 18 Gold, 16 Platinum and 56 multi-Platinum Digital Single Awards, in addition to her 2x multi-Platinum album “Teenage Dream” and Platinum album “One Of The Boys.”

I'm sure she's not selling too many vinyl's or cassettes either..........or wax cylinders.

Pretty sure when the new Taylor Swift record comes out it's a matter of weeks before it goes platinum. The last one went platinum in a week.

i wouldnt count out ac/dc either... i think black ice sold about 800K the first week and 250K the week after in 2008

The RIAA platinum certification counts digital album sales.

It's worth noting that non-digital sales are based on shipped, and not sold albums so it's possible to go platinum on high expectations alone.

think its largely to do with how people consume music now as much as their willingness to spend money on it.

I agree.

So many people listen to playlists these days, not albums. Albums are important especially for artist/band development and live shows but they aren't the way most people I know listen for pleasure anymore. The only people I know who are still album listeners are people like myself who listen to CDs in cars. Everyone I've spoken to on this subject personally just uses iTunes/Spotify and skips to whatever song they want to listen to at that moment in time. The only exceptions seem to be when a favourite artist releases a new album, then that will get a few plays, then back to playlists again. It is much easier to consume music these days very cheaply and legally without needing to buy your own copy. Again, most people I know only buy albums they know they like or to support a favourite artist or whatever. All anecdotal, granted, but I think it is pretty representative.

The whole point of this thread is that it's hard to sell any music to the standards of 15 years ago but congrats on making literally everything a conspiracy.

Congrats on blaming me for google, youtube, NSA, and their pervert pals.

Begin the Illuminati memes!

Why even say this? How are said names above related to Illuminati? Actually don't answer. There are like 3 channels to get music these days and if you fail to see the big brother in that then good luck to you, NSA is hiring and I am sure they can use a few more pervs on this board.
