So i have a 412 that i mainly record with, if not with a pod or something of the sort. I know this is kind of a stupid question, im sorry. But I want to get rid of the 412 for a 212 now that i no longer play shows and want to focus mainly on studio work. will there be a difference in sound recording a 212 to a 412 cab? I usually record fredman style with two 57s if that helps. I am just curious, thanks :]

The short answer is yes there will certainly be a difference. Cabinet resonance (and volume, dimension, construction, etc.) play a significant role in the sound of a cab. Hence the reason why two cabs with the same drivers sound different. That said, you should certainly be able to get good tones out of a 2x12.

The difference between a 4x12 and 2x12 is not negligible. And no, you can't EQ your way out of it. Not even with the tonestack controls or even by recording in a corner and on the floor. [I hope you get the point.] :)

I really can't recall any kick-ass metal rhythm tone done with a 2x12, but I think Vai uses a 2x12 for his lead tones. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Dunno about Vai, but agreed 100% on everything else! I've owned two 2x12's and three 4x12's, all with V30s, and the 4x12's always won IMO! That's not to say good tones aren't possible out of a 2x12 though
