A 29-year-old man died of injuries he sustained in a fall during the Chicago Open Air festival. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the man, identified as Robert Smucz, was watching the concert on the mezzanine level of Toyota Park in Bridgeview just after 10 p.m. on Friday, July 15 when he fell. He was in "extremely critical" condition when he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 10:50 p.m. Friday, according to city spokesman Ray Hanania. Witnesses told police that Smucz had been sitting on a railing in the mezzanine section and fell to the concrete below. Autopsy results indicated that he suffered multiple injuries from the fall, and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner's office said. Smucz attended the Chicago Open Air festival with two friends. Robert's girlfriend wrote on Facebook: "Rob was one of the nicest people I had ever met and such an incredible person. He always wanted everyone around him to be happy. Everyone who met him loved him." She added: "He spent his last day doing what he liked the most — hanging out with his best friend, my brother, and his girlfriend." Friday marked the first day of the three-day Chicago Open Air, which was headlined that night by German industrial metallers RAMMSTEIN. Also appearing on the bill this weekend are DISTURBED and SLIPKNOT. Smucz's funeral will be held at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home in Niles on Thursday, followed by burial at Maryhill Cemetery.
