6505 JJ V Shuguang Preamp Tubes and Bias Mod (clips inside)

I put some Shuguang 12ax7B (8th Generation, not 9th as I couldn't find them here in Oz) preamp tubes in my 6505 today as well as doing the Bias Mod.

I recorded the following:

- 4 DI's with the JJ preamp tubes with the fixed bias.
- 4 DI's with the Shuguang preamp tubes with the fixed bias.
- 4 DI's with the Shuguang preamp tubes with the Bias Mod and biased around 60% average (very poorly matched Ruby Powertubes).
- the same setup as the last but with more Gain.

The Gain was very conservative on the first 3 (2 out of 10 on the Lead channel). The last one was 4 out of 10. You can still hear the difference between the first 3 clips though.

Nice stuff.

Listening briefly at night, the Shugang at 60% sounds tightest to me.

I prefer the JJ clip, smoother.

Anyway the Shuguang should be good for agressive stuff

EDIT : the Shuguang biased sounds very good (tight)

Cheers for the replies. I thought that since I was doing it anyway I might as well document it a little and post it here since the question of preamp tubes differences and Bias Mods comes up from time to time.

All things considered, the difference is fairly minor.
