A death metal lesson: by Mikael from Opeth

I enjoyed how he did it at Saratoga Winners even more. The crowd was maybe 400 people. I"m bad at guessing numbers but the place isn't even half the size Palladium is.
He starts out the whole, "We love it when the crowd sings along. So lets get you guys warmed up" etc.
Starts all the things and the crowd does their part. Then he does one just for the ladies and he's like "That was great, ladies. All 10 of you" and some kid in the crowd screams "That's a record!"
So he does the last one and then after it is like... "So.. now we're going to do a song with absolutely no death metal vocals. It's a lovely cock rock ballad from Damnation" etc

I'm horribly quoting what he said but it was hilarious. He's a great frontman. My boyfriend went to the show not knowing if he'd like it to loving the band afterward. He said he's never been able to get into their CDs but the music sounds 10x better live.

Saw them last night in Cleveland. Couldn't stay for the whole set. Sucked. But I got to enjoy what I saw. And he was getting quite a few laughs from the crowd. And that bassplayer's headbanging is still hilarious!!!

And Nevermore had the DEADEST crowd ever.

And Into Eternity had the CRAZIEST band ever.

Strange!

When we saw them, he started to introduce one song (don't remember which) and a bunch of people yelled out the name. He just kinda stopped and shook his head and said, "Fucking internet."

lol!

I'm interviewing him tomorrow for WREKage....I'll have to crack him up with this.

Warrell asked the crowd, "Does anybody here ever watch MTV?"

Huge disapproving boo.

"Not even for two hours on a Saturday night?"

Some booing, some realizing that's when Headbanger's Ball comes on.

"Then why do we make videos?"

Laughter... and then someone in the front row says something.

"Ahh! The smart one! That's right, FOR A DVD!!"

Crowd screams at the hint of an upcoming DVD.

"You get the Genius Award! That's right, we're planning on making a DVD!"

That kid musta felt Godlike. Heh heh.

He did the same thing at the webster hall NYC show. Great crowd, great set.

Into Eternity opened up and they were damn good. I can't say the same for Nevermore.

I saw Opeth last Friday. Akerfeldt could growl the phone book to me and I'd be thrilled. They put on an amazing show! And yes, Martin's sideways headbanging is absolutely hysterical - he's a great bass player!!!!!

made me laugh, its a running joke on the opeth forum to call Mendez just 'bass player'.

"Kook!"

I thought all three bands turned in good performances here at the Roxy. IE and their current singer were better than I had been expecting from the negative reports. Although I could have done without the really high-pitched vox, there were quite a few in the crowd who were impressed by him.

Nevermore were much better than the tour when Opeth opened for them, and had a good crowd reaction, too. There were a few times when the stage-right security guy left his post guarding the backstage entrance to watch in disbelief -- usually when Jeff was wailing away on guitar.

Opeth were terrific. I had seen part of their playlist beforehand ("damned Internet!") but not all of it, and the songs I wasn't expecting ("Bleak," "Deliverance," "Blackwater Park") were all the sweeter for being surprises to me.

Damn near perfect crowd, too. Not oversold, not jam-packed, but very respectable numbers for the Roxy. I have to assume that Clear Channel and Peter Conlon will take note. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen.

Our pre-show interview with Mikael went quite well -- after we ran across the street to Hi-Fi Buys and bought an RCA-to-8th-inch cord for 20 friggin' dollars -- and should be posted soon at www.wrekage.org. Mikael did confirm that a metal project with Steve Wilson is is in the works, and that Mike Portnoy may well be involved. (He mentioned MP before I asked about 'im.) A return to the States for Opeth for February is all but certain. They'll be taking January completely off, in part so Mike can be with his daughter for a time.

I'll post photos from the show, including some fun stuff, as soon as Picasa notices the jpgs on the drive. :erk:

Aww yeah, buddy... rockstar. Right there.

Wow, that pic looks better than when I was chopping and cutting them. :D

Peter L. really was quite sick that day, too -- he was supposed to participate in our interview with Mikael also, but begged off. After Mikael's lurid description during the show of the nature of Peter's symptoms, I'm glad he did. :)

As an update regarding the audio interview, the current plan is to broadcast it in segments during this coming late-Friday's WREKage show -- near CD-quality and lower-quality MP3 live streams are available for those who are beyond broadcast range -- and then post it on the site as a podcast....whatever a 'podcast' is. :D
