Having just retrieved it from the jaws of Duellist's CD player, I was listening to Capitol Punishment last night and thinking what a poor excuse for a compilation it is- especially for a newbie like me whose knowledge of Megadeth is sorely lacking.

So, if you were putting together a 2 CD best-of, which songs would you choose and why? It would be great to have every album represented fairly, as well as a few soundtrack cuts (eg Angry Again, Go To Hell and No More Mr Nice Guy) thrown in for good measure.

Also, am I the only one who thinks "Kill The King" is so good it should have been kept back for the new album? Love that song!

W

Firstly Capitol Punishment was released for the sole reason of completing Megadeth's contract with Capitol. Megadeth wanted SO badly to get off that label, Dave has said that if the label wanted to put Crush 'Em 14 times on the compilation he would have agreed to it. He wasn't gonna argue with them over track selection... he just wanted out.

Part of the deal was giving Capitol 2 tracks from the new material. Kill the King and Dread and The Fugitive Mind were chosen. Both were suppose to be released as singles. Kill the King was... Dread wasn't. So Capitol agreed to let Megadeth have that song back to put on their new album. I agree it's a shame Kill the King isn't gonna be available anywhere other than Capitol Punishment, because it's a great track... but they have been playing it on tour which is good.

Not including the new album my 2CD greatest hits would look like this...

Bloody oath I love So Far :) The first half of that album is amazing! As is In My Darkest Hour. The rest is awesome too but not enough space to put in the greatest hits haha.

I love Peace Sells a bit more probably, but didn't have the space to put Good Mourning/Black Friday and Bad Omen in, hehe.

Yeah Risk isn't too bad, I was slighty exaggerating hehe... but I don't think there are any songs on it that would fit into the top 24 Megadeth songs of all time. I already had to leave out the above mentioned songs from Peace Sells, and These Boots, Looking Down The Cross, Black Curtains, Train Of Consequences, The Killing Road, Ashes In Your Mouth, Countdown To Extinction, Duke Nukem Theme, 99 Ways To Die, Go To Hell... anyway I think you can see a pattern here haha... I need a 3CD greatest hits!

Oh and favourite songs from The World Needs A Hero if I were to put some on a greatest hits:
Return To Hangar
Promises
Disconnect
1000 Times Goodbye
Dread And The Fugitive Mind

:)

Yeah that's right, all of the above!

One thing though, Train of Consequences is my least-favourite album on Youthanasia. I much prefer the likes of I Thought I Knew It All and Victory, but not many seem to mention those. Am I alone there?

Thanks for the response, lads :).
I'm going to have to buy (or at least borrow) a few more 'Deth CDs so I can check out some of the songs you mentioned.
And for what my uneducated opinion is worth, I *like* Crush 'Em. It might be cheesy, but that's part of its charm...

Crush 'Em far from the best Megadeth song, but it still can be enjoyable.

Remember the Pepsi 'Make your own CD' offer? Crush "em was one of the tracks you could chose, so The Invisible Boy and I both got a CD each with Crush 'Em on it six times.

Rob: I Thought I Knew It All RULES!!!!
It's my 2nd fave song on the album after the title track.

And Victory has the best lyrics! Haha!

Least favourite album?! What kind of drugs am I on??!!! :)

I agree Trent, Victory's lyrics are great! And I'm glad someone agrees with me on ITIKIA! (That sounds like a Swedish furniture chain) ;)
