I can't really intrepret the attack/release times here. :ill: Both of them range from 1-7, and the manual says it's got attack times of 20 microseconds to 800 microseconds, and release times of 50 milliseconds to 1.1 seconds. Anybody?

The main thing to know regarding the 1176 is that the attack and release get faster as you turn the knob clockwise, and slower when you turn counter-clockwise. This is the opposite of many compressors out there.

Use a faster attack to smooth out sounds and push them "back" in the mix, or a slower attack to let transients come through for more articulation and punch.

The release is trickier depending on what you're going for, you'll want to set it by ear. I usually use the 1176 on bass and vocals and usually go for a medium attack (between 3 and 5) and a faster release (between 5 and 7).

Just use your ears and you'll be fine.

what he said basically.
On the H/w units, on sung vocals; im usually doing input 30 ish out put 18 ish attack 1.5 - 3 release between 6 and 7.
4:1 ratio
pretty standard 1176 setting really; most studios i've been into/have seen photos of it abbey road included have these settings china graphed on (no that has never influenced how i arrived at these settings; but a happy coincidence)
on more screamy vocals I'll prob push the input to around 24 or so and bring the output down a touch and maybe make the release closer to 7 and probs use all buttons.
Looking for about 7-10 Db MAX reduction generally, well in all buttons its anyones guess, and it depends on how reliable the Vu is (it ain't on this one)
Totally depends on the mic/singer/style/1176 as those things all have a personality of their own....

so that was you outside my window with a camera the other day!!!

Im quite new to getting great vocal sounds. Obviously ears are the key and it varies from singer to singer, but when do you normally tend to move into the over compression zone on an 1176? About 20db? Im usually seeing 12-15db off.
