Abominant - “Upon Black Horizons” Deathgasm Records
This is the best thing to ever come out of Kentucky! Forget about Flaw, Abominant have been paying their dues with their uncompromising brand of Brutal, yet Melodic Death Metal since 1993! With 5 full length CDs under their belts, Abominant forges on with “Upon Black Horizons” which is by far their best release to date! Laying to waste all in their path with the opening track ‘The Quintessential Battle’, the goat boys display speed & Brutality in typical Abominant fashion with fast double time, heavy grinding yet melodic Rhythms, & Melody driven leads! Abominant never lets up through out these 9 tracks!
While each & every track on here is pretty stand out, my favorite picks would definitely have to be ‘Storm Of Eniquity’ with its more mid-paced melodic flavorings going head to head with Vocalist Mike Barnes Insane & inhuman Vocal phrasing, as well as ‘Through The Primordial Void’ & the title track ‘Upon Black Horizons’ which shows how powerful & versatile these guys can get within the realms of Brutality! At times Vocalist Mike doesn’t sound like his usual self on this release which is a good thing & shows more versatility as a vocalist! This is some of his best vocal work to date! Guitarists Timmie Ball & Buck Weideman share most of the Rhythm duties on this release, showing how tight & focused these 2 have become! Guitarist Timmie Ball unleashes some of his best lead guitar work to date displaying very fast yet emotional axework. Drummer Craig Netto unleashes his usual Speed & dexterity throughout these 9 tracks!
Abominant also redo an unlikely cover of Nuclear Assaults “Fight To Be Free”, which is a much more faster & raw version than the original classic & also has a guest guitar solo by Assisting Sorrow guitarist Chris Leffler! Recorded & mixed again at Canyon Studios by the talented Chris Cassetta, this is by far Abominant’s best production job to date! A very loud recording indeed!
As to why Abominant are still on an unknown label is beyond me! Lets hope these guys reach greater success with “Upon Black Horizons”. With Abominant you just can’t go wrong!
