As most of you already know a lot of the present album cover art
is made in programs like Photoshop etc.

I really respect artists like Travis Smith, but I am starting to miss the many
good old covers made by the likes of Edward J Repka
(Death, Megadeth...), Necrolord (Emperor, Dissection...),
H.R. Giger (Celtic Frost..), Dan SeaGrave (Entombed, Morbid Angel...)
and more..

This kind of art is still being produced, but has to some extent been 'replaced' by digital art.
Some of it is quite primitive and shallow as well!! (I will not mention examples..)

Have you noticed the same?

Hi this is Mick Kenney (Irrumator) from Anaal Nathrakh.
i am actually a cd cover artist hehe, and i totally agree with what you are saying. My work is a mixture of hand painted work, scanned objects and then i finish stuff off in photoshop. I try to use photoshop as little as possible, but it depends on what you want to achieve at the end.

id be greatfull if some of you lot had a look at some of my work

www.geocities.com/micks_art

cheers very much

eaaaaaggggghh

I agree with Phyre on Iron Maiden. Even though Brave New World had Derek Riggs working on the cover it doesn't match the artwork of their previous shit, like "Powerslave", "Somewhere in time", "Seventh son of a seventh son" and so on. "Fear of the dark" wasn't done by Derek Riggs either, but it was great. "X factor" was crap and "Virtual XI" was even crappier!!!
I enjoy covers like these:
Dead Can Dance "Spiritchaser": http://www.evo.org/html/wrap/DeadCanDance.Spiritchaser.cd.jpg.html
Dead Can Dance "Into the labyrinth": http://www.evo.org/html/wrap/DeadCanDance.IntoTheLabyrinth.cd.jpg.html
Dead Can Dance "The serpent's egg": http://www.evo.org/html/wrap/DeadCanDance.TheSerpentsEgg.cd.jpg.html
Parliament "Mothership Connection": http://www.duke.edu/~tmc/motherpage/albums_parliament/alb-mthrship.html
Parliament "Funkentelechy": http://www.duke.edu/~tmc/motherpage/albums_parliament/alb-funken.html
Both of the above are pretty bad scans.
Electric Prunes "Release of an oath": http://members.tripod.com/~shadwell/oath.html
"Thunderball" soundtrack by John Barry: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=866819228
Burzum "Hvis lyset tar oss" & "Filsofem": http://www.burzum.com/
click on "albums". It's Theodore Kittelsen who has painted them.
White Lightnin' "S/T": http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/8599/mati2.html
Scroll down to "White lightnin'". I also have The Chambers Brothers, Earth, Wind & Fire, Santana and I had Miles Davis, but White Lightnin' is the best in my opinion. Buy the record and you'll get a better picture!
And my personal favorite is probably George Marinos "Bazar" which is hanging on my wall, but I haven't been able to locate a picture of it on the internet (too obscure).
If I have to nominate a record for the worst cover art it would be a record I have myself - this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=862939615
I can't imagine a worse cover image. This was the best picture I could find, but still...

Yeah, I agree with this actually... I enjoy a lot of the digital art stuff but also miss the old hadn drawn stuff. I especially liked Dan SeaGrave´s work.

I like a mixture - I think digital media can unlock extra lyers of complexity and detail that simply wouldn't be possible in analog paintings/drawings etc., but I really appreciate good artwork that's been don eby hand as well. Mick Kenney's stuff is a perfect example, actually - the balance of handpainting/photography etc. with Photoshop filters is just right.
Does anyone know the name of the artist that made the cover fro Obituary - Anthology, though? That really kicks ass, and I wouldn't mind seeing more of his work.
