Adding dynamics to the brickwalled CD is possible!

Do you know what is the coolest thing you didnt heard on the latest Metallica and All That Remain CD? DYNAMICS!

But check this shit out: 30 seconds of the original, then 30 seconds of the version with dynamics.

I know Izotope has the RX declipper which is suppose to be really hi quality - but I sitll think that once the audio is clipping, you can't undo it. You can emulate a non-clipped version, but once that wave is squared off - that's it.

But just for fun I'll run my retail DM through the Rx Declipper to see how it turns out :P

Haha, funny thing, I just tried this out yesterday without knowing you'd post this...
But afaik the parts that get "declipped" are just the parts that would otherwise initially clip? if it's been limited before up to a lower threshold it won't work there?
Though judging by that picture I'm not sure if I'm making sense here at all

Im not hearing much if any difference. But then I'm not listening on great monitors, I'll try on headphones later.

I do think that most clipping is fairly inaudible. Is it the compression that gets applied in mastering, or the clipping, that leads to ear-fatigue? If its the compression, this won't do very much I don't think. If its the clipping, then a better judge would be 20 mins of each and see which is easier to listen to.

compressing, limiting, and clipping...be it at the track level or on the master, all lead to an overall lack of dynamics - and ear fatigue along with it

I do not know why someone would want to slam a CD anyway.

Because the average (metal) listener is used to the constant sonic impact of modern productions. Most people will have a none-so-hi-fi listening environment anyway... they want their records to be "loud, in your face and faaaat".

I'll remember being proud as fuck about my early mixes... of course they were flawed, but they had 100% natural drums and were very dynamic (and therefore overall a lot quieter than what's being put out nowadays).

Basically NOBODY in my band appreciated that... they just don't pay attention to something like that, because they're not used to.

It seems like it needs ridiculous amounts of clipping to get a greater number of people complaining about the issue. Like with the latest Metallica...
