It leaked. Post your thoughts here.

In case you are wondering, I just started it now, so I am in no position to judge it yet.

Listened to it before bed last night, it seems a bit more upbeat then they're other work, but still just as great.

It is definitely very good, one of the best I've heard so far this year but I've only put two listens in, need more to let it properly sink in.

a little distraught SO FAR, because I was not expecting this...

To be the better release of 2010 (even though les discrets' 2010 album is just as good, but I've known alcest long before they released escallies de lune)

This is not an "upbeat" album though. @gundam

A very inconsistent record.

The metal parts, for the majority, are an absolute abomination: leads are extremely sloppy, and Haughm's vocals sound so thin it's actually difficult to hear him.

Drum production is horrific, with blastbeats and faster patterns being ruined and losing their effect due to the terrible mixing. There is no breadth to the sound, the toms all sound flat as though no sound travels through the barrel of the drum.

The record sounds as though it was recorded during practice, with none of the guitars actually being properly tuned, evident throughout attrocious leads across all songs. There is little to no cohesion during the majority of the record, and many concepts do not appear to be fully realised.

However, I am summing up the negatives here, which unfortunately, are quite strong especially throughout the first half of the album. The second half sees the glue of proper, more conceived ideas holding realisations together better, and a bleak atmosphere finally takes shape with some direction. Reports of the band returning to their roots hold fruit here, you *can* hear characteristics of the first few recordings up until (and including) The Mantle.

The second half of the record's production sounds more effective than the first, but the bad taste of the drumming mix stains the entire album.

I've heard that there was an intention to have and older and rawer production style. Raw yes, but not in a way that works. Any intended warm or analogue feel simply doesn't come across.

These observations are from first listen only. Perhaps my feelings will change over time...

Strongly disagree. The drumming is amazing, which is odd to say for Agalloch considering how bad their drums were in the past. The production is great and the songwriting is impeccable. The leads are awesome and Haughm's voice has never sounded better. I think this is definitely going to go down as their best album.

I was actually surprised that I didn't consider Ecailles de Lune to be a life changing masterpiece, like Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde was. Still give Ecailles a 10 / 10 though. Fucking love it for what it is.

After like 3 listens it doesn't feel like it's going to be better than any of their first 3 albums, but we'll just have to see. Also, Ecailles is definitely superior thus far (though I have spun that one like 25-30 times).

Damn man, you must make up your mind really quickly. I didn't consider Ashes Against the Grain to be Agalloch's best album until I'd heard it about 150 times over the span of a year or two.

I can only think of 2 albums off the top of my head that I've even listened to 150 times period, so, yea I guess. But I'd like to think that I've trained my ear enough at this point to tell a thing or two about releases simply after the 2nd or 3rd listen. I'm not saying I've memorized the whole album yet, but I can generally follow it and tell what impression it makes on me.
