Aggressive alternative rock, more rock/metallic-leaning than punk

I'm trying to get into some alternative rock stuff but what I enjoy is small in amount relative to what I hate. Manic Street Preacher's The Holy Bible and Thought Industry's Outer Space is Just a Martini Away are the best examples of what I'm looking for. Minimal acoustic laid-back stuff ala The Flaming Lips, riffs more in a standard rock format than the feedback-laden twang of noise rock, and a vocalist that actually sings instead of whispering/moaning are the traits I'm looking for. I know virtually nothing about this genre, so if REM or Sonic Youth or whatever other obvious band has albums in this vein, don't hesitate to mention them.

Thanks for the recs! Rocket From the Crypt definitely hits what I'm looking for. The first result from Turbonegro sounded great as well ('Fuck the World') but a lot of their other material seems to be more simplistic and bouncy punk rock stuff. Most of Tomahawk's material sounds a bit mellow, although it's still really good. Urge Overkill sounds more in the laid-back largely-acoustic style; any specific songs? I tried listening to a few from each album, but their earlier material doesn't seem available.

As far as Urge Overkill goes, I guess they're a bit more tame than the other recs. I have Saturation and Exit The Dragon and they've both got a good solid mix of stuff on them. Nothing too full on though.

Some songs:

And I'm pretty new to Turbonegro, I have Apocalypse Dudes which has some good stuff on it, although yeah it's probably more punk than you were after.

And yeah Rocket from the crypt are great. Scream Dracula Scream is the album to get.
