Album cover of the debut (and what the title means)

For the longest time, I thought of what the hell was on the album cover of "The Red in the Sky is Ours".... at first, I thought it looked like a giant red blood cell or something.... but then I took a closer look, and it vaguely looks like an open hand with a ball of red light in the middle of it (which would make better sense, considering the album title). Now, is there any ideas as to what the title "The Red in the Sky is Ours" could mean/be implying? I will probably need to inspect the lyrics to the title track more...
