Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson recently appeared on The Torg & Elliott Show to discuss the release of his current band Envy Of None’s second album, Stygian Wavz, due March 28 via Kscope.
During the interview, Lifeson was asked if he ever tires of talking about his time spent with Geddy Lee and Neil Peart. An excerpt has been transcribed as follows;
Do you ever get to the point where you’re just sick of talking about Rush? Cause it’s part of your life. Do you get sick of, every time I do an interview, someone’s going to ask me if we’re getting back together?
“I get it. It’s okay,” replied Alex. “We toured for 40 years. There are very few bands that have had that kind of longevity. And we went out at a period where we were kind of at a peak. So I can understand all the interest or hopes for something.”
“The world is a crazy place right now. Everything changes every day right now. And I’m so happy and satisfied with what I’m doing with Envy Of None, and I’m working on a number of other projects, on a documentary and things like that. So I’m super active. I’ve come out of this short retirement into activity beyond what I ever expected. So, who knows what the future holds? I understand it. Rush fans dream about it. So I get it. And I don’t have a problem with it.”
Rush’s final tour concluded in August 2015 in Los Angeles, California. Sadly, Rush drummer Neil Peart died of glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in January 2020, at age 67.
Since Peart’s tragic death, Lifeson and bassist / vocalist Geddy Lee have not recorded any new music or performed live under the Rush moniker.
Though they’d never describe themselves as such, Envy Of None are the living, breathing definition of a supergroup. No other band on earth could rightly claim to have Alex Lifeson – one of rock’s most influential visionaries – heading up guitar duties, with Andy Curran of Coney Hatch and Soho 69 overseeing bass/programming as well as producer extraordinaire Alfio Annibalini on keyboards. However, the star in this band could very well be its youngest member – American singer-songwriter Maiah Wynne – whose wonderfully emotive vocals are able to spin the music in new exciting directions that thrill to the core.
On their self-titled debut of 2022, the group were able to prove that they were a lot more than the sum of their parts, with an abundance of panache and finesse poured into a contemporary alt rock sound that was hard to predict and even harder to categorize. This year’s sophomore release, Stygian Wavz, is the sound of a band basking in the radiant glow of creative confidence and coming into their own, staggering the listener with every twist and turn encased within their heady mix of genre-splicing brilliance.
