my friend is a photographer for one of the bands and i got a couple of passes for the show.

unofficial review:

animals as leaders - awesome group, sounded incredible!

a skylit drive - very novelty however also sounded great... (vocals were a bit off). =\

thursday - one of the greatest rock bands of the decade... almost every song gave me chills. (truly inspiring)!

underøath - calculated, well rehersed although a bit theatrical and over indulgent... but the music was great (as always).

overall sound = a bit squinty, but it was the regency ballroom in sf, ca... so very reverberant high-mids. :zombie:

i think overall ...it was a pleasure to watch thursday perform their 10 year anniversery of the album full collapse in its entirety. a record that remains to be dated. i have seen underøath perform numerous times and it is always a spectacular performance however it was not the same feeling i perceived without the presence of aaron. that kid was definitely something special to the group's brilliance.

another note: a skylit drive was practically boo'd for mentioning the release of their upcoming record seeing as no one really gave a rats ass. :ill:

although their performance summoned the most unbelievable mosh pit... so it must be said that there is a validity to the existence of a skylit drive.

thanks for reading, boys & girls.

Kind of a bummer Skylit Drive was boo'd - I quite like them, awesome band once you get into the vocals.

Figured that Underoath would be near perfect... just super talented dudes!

AaL is SUCH an off fit for that tour - how was the crowd response to that?

it's sf ...so you know, weed + heavy-instrumental music with insane leads = o_O

i think it went as well as any other virtuoso band could hope for in a place like sf.

i have seen them a lot... dc/portland/texas/ny/florida. and every time i see/hear them, the sound is getting better and better. i just think their stage presence is going to lead them to obscurity ...that is... if it already hasn't

i think overall, people liked them though.

with regards to a skylit drive... i truly enjoyed the show. but their matching black tank-tops and tight (perfectly) ripped jeans had me thinking "backstreet boys" the whole time, which might have contributed to half the enjoyment of their presentation.

i do like a skylit drive however i feel like it's better for me to refer to their recorded persuasion than the live aspect... only because i would like to maintain a shred of respect for them as musicians and not let the stereo typical boyband/rockband methos influence my perception.

then again i could be over-thinking something so simple as a good, old fashioned performance. :)

I think a lot of people would say Underoath is a "boy band" too...

I like Thursday, but Full Collapse was the best they put out and the stuff since then isn't all that great. Still, good live band if you're into that kind of music...

AAL was pretty entertaining when I saw them with Circa Survive & Dredg, and their live mix was pretty good, but I didn't really like the guitar tones too much... It was very easy to tell you were hearing the Axe-FX. Great playing though... but I wouldn't expect many people at the show you're talking about to be too interested in them. They don't exactly appeal to the majority of people who'd be there (teenage girls & trendy guys trying to have sex with said teenage girls) :p

hmm... i dunno.

i wouldn't really file underoath ...under the "boy-band" category ...only because they pretty much go where they want (musically)... they don't really follow a trend (so-to-speak) or base their musical development on their existing fans (maybe/maybe not) ...but i do get what you are implying.

*they are a trendy-metalcore band. and people will observe that.

however, i feel like they were a big part of pioneering that genre so they deserve a lot more revere in that respect and not just to be pigeon holed into a trendy boy band nomenclature.

full collapse is PIVOTAL (imo) however war all the time is what i believe to be the record that ushers thursday into becoming some of the best (rock) musicians of the decade.

their music is simple yet aggressively-enthralling... (that... you can quote me) !!!

What is with this forum lately? Styles of singing being 'gay' and 'only for teenage girls'? Underoath and Skylit Drive being 'boy bands'??

People take comparisons way too far, way too fast these days.

Not that into War All The Time... I thought it was somewhat of a flop. Full Collapse and the song Jet Black New Year from before that = their best stuff, IMO.

About Underoath.... I don't know... Maybe it's just because they're from here that I think that way... but I just don't see them as being particularly innovative or creative, and although they've changed styles multiple times, each and every one of those styles was a rehash of what other bands have already done. They had the dark, angry, but simple metalcore stage with Dallas, the poppy sing-a-long "screamo" stage, and more recently the Botch-like/noisy old school metalcore stage...

well... thursday certainly saw a lot of attention with war all the time considering it was their first major label record release and they ranked number seven on the billboard top 200 albums chart for a considerable amount of time.

i'd say that is quite the opposite of a flop ...wouldn't you?

-

if a popular band comes from your home town ...wouldn't that make you more inspired/proud? i think cynicism is a common response but a lot of musicians come out of my home town and i am nothing but respectful and admirable. i have a lot of respect for underoath because they create music under the constraints of their beliefs... this is a sense of "close-mindedness" but that has not hindered their ability to progress as a band and reach their goals as musicians. i will admit that the sound is not the same with aaron out of the picture and it is now definitely missing something ...but that's just like, my opinion ...man. ;)

also... with "they're only chasing safety" ...the only member of underoath was aaron, so they were literally a completely different band. and seeing it is how that record sold more than the two previous albums combined in the first week and reached more people to acquire a core audience ...it was apparent that underoath a brand new band... (spick-and-span).

now ...none of the original members are in the band, therefore the band that you remember doesn't even really exist. (spoooooky)!

That sums it up pretty well! I went because I didn't want to miss AAL, but I definitely had fun the whole night. I felt bad for skylit drive - it sounded almost like the singer was apologizing, wtf :( But there seemed to be a fair number of fans in the crowd, so maybe it wasn't so bad.
Though I couldn't help but chuckle every time they did those synchronized guitar over-the-head flips! They look so silly.

you live in norcal?

what it do!?!?

yeahh... that whole thing about "this next song, i promise ...it will make you poop! and if it doesn't i will shut up!" was just stupid. it was very desperate.

i'm going to glassjaw on the 27th ...that's guaranteed to slam!
