s34nsm411 has opend the gates for another non.metal-mix.....so here it comes ;)

it's a friend's band i recorded, it's not the finished version (some clean gits, single words, special FX and a solo missing), but I'm alredy pretty satisfied with the resulkts.

Drums are sonor force 2003 (the cheaoest good sounding kit)
guitars: my CS jackson soloist emg 89 into my signature amp --> engl cab--->sm57 --->SPL goldmike -->Fireface. (backvox my GF ;)...)

bass: warwick DI reamped in guitarrig

tell me what you think...

songs waaay tooo long so feel free to stop listening when you get bored after 2 min, but as i said there's still some stuff to come.

Pretty Star

Nice dude. There are a few things that could have been different, but those are mainly in terms of personal taste. You know already that there's practically nothing technically wrong, and it sounds very balanced. That cleo is especially hot.
Really top notch work. I even enjoyed listening to the whole track.

listening now, what's your "signature amp?" btw.

the snare kinda bothers me, it sounds boxy and a little dry. The guitars sound small when they kick in the dirty part. I like the bass, the vocals sound good.

weird, I absolutely love the snare.....
so it's probably just a matter of taste, I gated it pretty tightly, 'cause I was looking for really clear separate signals.
The guitars do indeed sound a little small, but I wanted to use them more like a synth than the way they're used in metal, I didn't want the chorus to become bigger/louder than the verse the "here comes the chorus-feel" should be created by adding instruments and vox without increasing intensity/volume too much, for that kinda songs i like it when the chorus flows into the next verse without too much of a clear separation.
but i definitely do understand what you wanna say, and I'm thinking about changing the snare a bit to a less gated, less compressed sound.....i love it the way it ism but you're the 2nd one who's complaining about the snare, though...
perhaps a bit more bottom-mic or so...

my signatureamp is a preamp custombuilt to my specifications, three discrete channels
clean: dumble-clone
chrunch: improved soldano x88r-clone
lead: improved SLO-clone switchable to engl (mix of PB and Blackmore)

"clone" doesn't really mean "clone" here, it's more that i gave that amps as a reference and told the designer what I wanted to have changed, so it's pretty much an unique design, but based on that models (so is the 5150 or the recto etc).

as poweramp I'm using a mesa simul 295

here's a Song recorded with the Lead channel:

Nice guitar sound dude. I wish it was a bit louder in the mix so I could hear more of it. What Cab is that into?

Engl standard loaded with v30.
just because i prefer the wood and the price of the standard over the pro, but i do like the v30 speakers of the pro, so i just loaded one of my cabs with v30 and left the v60 in the other one, perfect blend.
the v60 are pretty cool, too.
mic was mainly a sm57 with a little bit of m160 ribbon mixed into (like 26 db less or so)

git was robin medley loaded with emg 85......love that 85 compared to the 81!
no ts used

"where do you come FROM"

germany to anwer that ;)
funny/sad thing is that the singer is actually half british, but his father NEVER spoke english to him, so i had a pretty tough time to get him pronouncing the stuff at least "ok", he always tried to sing with "sock-in-mouth-american-accent" o told him ppl will realize that he's not an native speaker anyways, so they should at least understand him ;)
oh, and i used a JMP with explorer on some other songs...kicks ass, i never liked marshall, but for stuff like that it was great (although i modded it ;).

thanks for your "thumbsup" on the snare, i started to think I'm the only one that likes it ;)

Here's the final version (at least i hope so, if there are major problems you see/hear, i gotta do it over again;) ).

please post some comments about the production.
it won't harm you to listen to something boring/not metal ;)

Essential Feedback - Pretty Star, Full Version

every comment helps, I'm not so much into that poiprock-stuff, so more ears can detect more weaknesses in the mix....

radio-ready?
(the radio version will be faded after the 2nd chorus though)

Thanks in advance, dudes

LSD

P.S. i know, those stupid comet-fx are pretty annoying, but the singer insits on them...

Hm, the singer is too dry, as far as I am concerned. His voice isn't top quality, so maybe you want to wet it down more. Think Coldplay, Raemon etc. ...

I also think the snare is too loud/upfront. It is louder than the vocals most of the time The whole mix sounds kinda "untogether". There is a lot of separation going on, which is generally good, but it makes it sound so "un-radio". I guess radio multiband compression will take care of that.

The more I listen to it, I think you shouldn't have recorded drums, but programmed them, if it was possible. It just doesn't sound tight enough overall. I like the bass sound.

Tbh, I think this song will never be on any radio program ... it's just too boring. The plodding drumming doesn't help either, but that's just personal opinion (and I like radio rock/pop).

don't think it will be on radio, just want it to sound like it could be ;)
i think more compression won't be that good, esp. not when thinking about radio, in radio everythink gets compressed to death anyway.

programming drums was not an option, cause the other songs are nat as gay as this one, and we wanted to achieve a sound that is not too different from song to song.
reference given was kings x, deftones, tool...
i know, pretty much impossible to achieve with that band and that budget (900€ for 10 track album). but the other songs are at least a bit in that direction, so not THAT boring....

but i agree, that song's boring as hell ;)

H I like the bass sound.
na immerhin etwas ;)
