Another Unicorn Question for Dan

I've only heard one Unicorn album, Emotional Wasteland and I was wondering one thing about it. Though I find it great, I let my girlfriend listen to it and she noticed something that I hadn't. The music is very happy and upbeat-sounding, though the lyrics are full of sadness and sorrow. Why is this, Dan?
