Anybody seen the review of The Odyssey on UM?

That UM reviewer was out to lunch. What the hell cd did he listen to? For one, Michael Romeo's solos are definitely faster on the Odyssey than they were on V so right away I am left scratching my head about his review. I think they are still melodic, but he definitely was a little more solo happy. I will never understand some people's taste but to each his own.

Me thinks the UM guy hardly had the time to really listen to the album.

As for positive reviews, I can post 2 or 3 of them in English, but that was not the point of this post :(

I agree that upon first listen, the songs aren't as catchy as some of the ones on TDWOT and TIO. I found nothing catchy about the songs on V, and actually didn't care for that album after even the 3rd time listening to it. Then I misplaced it and I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I hope I find it soon as I would like to go back and listen to it again as I sometimes find that the more I listen to an album or song that I don't initially like, the more those particular songs become my favorites tha tI never grow tired of. Of course, I loved TDWOT the first time I heard it and still do, so...

Anyway, I really disagree with the statement that "You think they could have done more" (or whatever). I think they intended for this album to be dark and heavy, and that's exactly what they created. And created masterfully, I would have to say! This is one of the heaviest albums I've heard in a long time (and I don't count those growling death bands in that statement either).

That's a horrible review... and not just because the reviewer gave the album a 7.5... There's absolutely not substance or depth to it...

"I get the feeling the reviewer could have done more" :D

I was sent a promo copy a few weeks ago after I proudly accepted to review the CD for prog4you.com (I had reviewed "V" for them). It should be published within the next day or 2. It's a very positive review. I am blown away by this collection of songs. Hey everybody...enjoy "The Odyssey". It's fantastic!!!

I have to agree with the general sentiment here; the reviewer [of the topic post] must be addicted to /something/ *cough*. ;-) j/k As much as I believe "to each his own," the review didn't cover anything of substance. Asking up front whether SX are "really a progressive band or ... content to release the same stuff over and over" and following that with "the epic title track, 24 minutes of glorious progressive metal, perhaps the best thing the band has ever done" gives the audience an impression of sloppiness, like the reviewer didn't make time to really listen to the album at all and just glossed over it to write an ambivalent "review." I'm not saying every review /has/ to be glowing in order for it to be "good," but hey, at least cover something of substance.

I'm sorry but that review from Ultimate Metal is a load of crap if you ask me. The reviewer seems like he's so dissapointed with the records that Symphony X have released after The Divine Wings Of Tragedy and that affects his view on the new album. He doesn't make any valid points ''Michael Romeo doesn't play at the speed of before'' some of the solos that MJR did on The Odyssey are among his fastest.

Ps. Don't get me wrong, it's not like he needed to give the Odyssey a good review but at least be more objective with your review not with an attitude of ''Oh Symphony X hasn't released anything good after Divine Wings Of Tragedy''.

(Reviews are opinions anyway:grin: )

I wrote the review and I stand by what I said.
There seems to be a generic SX formula and they don't stray too far from that in most songs.
FYI I listened to it at least 6 times.
TDWoT is SX greatest album and I measure each album against this and for me it dosen't stack up.

As for the solo's, I meant that they were less neo-classical and more melodic to my ears, and reminded me in places of John Petrucci's style.

The title track and Accolade II aside, the rest of the material dosen't do much for me.

For me SX always used to have many songs with glorious harmonies in the chorus, they knew how to pen a catchy chorus.
Granted that this album is heavier than anything they've done previously, to me they have sacrificed some melody for this heavines.

However I still ordered the CD and will give it another chance.

I may change my mind on this, but this is still a disappointing release for me right now.

BTW I have been a SX fan since I bought Divine Wings on Jap import many years ago.

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate the maturity of your comments and no death threats :)

Seriously though, certainly this album deserves more than you reviewing it after hearing it 6 times.
