These Belgian cats almost never disappoint with straight ahead quality black metal madness, without the kvlt basement production effort:

I've always sort of clumped Enthroned together with the shitty overproduced full-speed-ahead "black metal" bands like Marduk, Naglfar, and Dark Funeral. These songs do little to change my mind.

Old Marduk was nice. And I'd take Enthroned over DF anyday when it comes to cheesy overproduction. Never heard naglfar, so I can't really say anything about em yet.

Swedish black metal is never more than average. With a few exceptions for for example Watain and perhaps Dissection (if these two would qualify). Can't say Enthroned ever made me very excited either.

I'm not being a dick when I ask this ... just want to get that out of the way up front..

I always see Black Metal fans talking about "over production" when it comes to this music. Technology evolves, and as better technologies to improve the sonic character of the music changes why shouldn't these bands embrace this?

I mean lets look at it from another perspective....

Listen to the Nevermore Demo, then listen to POE the production on POE is much better. Now after listening to POE listen to TGE, its even better. I don't see an issue with using good production to convey the quality of the music. Nothing drives me nuts more then good music that's badly produced.

To me it just seems like saying a bands album is "over produced" is a cool thing to say to try and prove how "kvlt" you are ...when it comes to Black Metal anyway.

I'm with Guru on this one. I've never once believed that good production takes away from the atmosphere and overall "grimness" (for lack of a better term) of a good black metal record. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say that some of the legendary black metal albums out there with the bedroom production qualities would be even better with a real production and mixing job.

I also understand this is a highly debated and opinionated topic, and I understand the reasons these bands go for that sound and why the fans love it so much. The problem for me is that it makes it unlistenable and sometimes even literally hurts my ears.

ya really think Det Som En Gang Var would be half as magical if it sounded like TGE?

100% until the end of time, YES!

I don't really even like that album because of how terrible it sounds.

For the record, Det Som En Gang Var sounds a thousandfold better and more polished than Filosofem, so if you're already comparing, you might as well get some REALLY dirty raw albums in. or artists. Production quality would probably not be more Kvlt than Xasthur.

The production on the new burzum is really what i would classify as "perfect". To me that means it suits the music perfectly, as much as any of the instruments themselves do.

<3 filosofem production

Don't get me wrong, I personally cannot fathom the songs being produced any other way on that album, but just as an objective juxtaposition on both works, prison can usually be an obstruction between a man and his recording equipment...
